**‘SWIMMING IS. very technical, that’s the thing.”’ By Elizabeth Collings News Reporter So says Trish Holme as she looks down on me from her lofty (and warm) perch on the pool deck. I cling to the pool edge, shivering, as the real amphibians swim briskly around me. “No kidding,”’ I splutter. Holme, the race director for the North Shore Spring Triathlon, was re-introducing me to water, a substance | haven't floated in for quite some time. As she tells me to keep my head up, my elbows high and to uncurl my hands, I begin to query what the chances are of me_ being freestyle-fit for the short-course triathlon on May 20. But not to worry: After a weekend triathion clinic at Ron Andrews 1 felt almost enthused about developing a swimming technique. The Feb. 9-11 clinic, led by Paul Granger, was an excellent primer for those venturing into the world of triathlons. The par- ticipants ranged from a 17-year- old duathlon whiz, a former Olympic downhill ski racer and an experienced marathoner to several recreational athletes and one fellow who insisted he was a complete amateur. (By the way, Bill, I never bought that line, especially after I saw you in the pool.) The clinic was packed with in- formation and hands-on experi- ence. During the three days, we had sessions with a nutritionist and a running shoe store repre- sentative as well as hands-on ex- perience in the pool, on the bikes and on the track, and in the weight room. As well, Granger spoke at length about goal setting, training and motivation. The instruction in all three events gave examples of how to develop training schedules for each sport. National track team member Cindy Grant O’Krane gave us an overview on running while masters swim coaches Judy Aspinall and David Fletcher “Where the North Shore Mee The North Shore Flyers Hockey Team would like to thank our new sponsor for their support. Granger and several triathlete buddies joined the group on a bike ride at Seymour Demonstra- tion Forest where they showed us some cycling basics. The weekend wrapped up with a discussion and demonstrations on the transitions from swimming to cycling and from cycling to run- ning. After the clinic, my newfound enthusiasm for the sport was somewhat disrupted by a subse- quent week-long skiing holiday at Whistler. But now I’m back, armed with a tough but not overly ambitious training schedule and al! the theory needed for the next three months of training. All I have to do is put that theory into practice — the hard part. This weekend, it’s off to a bad- ly needed swim clinic and then a bike maintenance clinic by Westview Cycle on Feb. 25: For information on upcoming triathlon clinics, call Holme at 929-7314.
