SFU opens French software CHOOSING COMPUTER soft- ware for use in any classroom ‘is not easy: educational components, level of difficulty, age suitability and student interest are all factors. The problem is even greater when the “software is for Fren- ch-language immersion classes. “The special requirements for educational material mean teachers can not just buy programs because they are popular with certain age groups. But few have the time or expertise needed to create pro- grams," said Andre Obadia, head of Simon Fraser University’s Fren- ch-immersion teaching program. Simon Fraser has responded by establishing a French-language software centre in the faculty of education, with almost 200 disc and videotape programs available for review by teachers. “Finding educational software produced in French has been a problem,’’ Obadia said. ‘Now teachers will have access to the best that is available, and can learn how to apply it in the classroom.”? The centre is equip- ped with a variety of computers, monitors and printers for hands-on testing by teachers and groups of students. “We have sent a catalogue to each school district, listing and evaluating available material,’’ Obadia said. ‘*Further information can be sent by modem to interested teachers. “We recently held a workshop for French-immersion teachers in Recycle a tie MAKE A tie for Dad. .
