They are not a cloistered order hiding in the trees of Caulfeild; they are more like a group of Robin Hood’s merry women. Rather than stealing from the rich to give to the poor, they engage in more law-abiding pur- suits, raising money to help, some- times the poor, but more often organizations that serve the entire North Shore community. Last year they renamed themselves the Francescan Outreach Society and became reg- istered as a charitable trust. In 1967 two members of St. Francis-in-the-Wood Anglican Church in Caulfeild met with the then rector, Bill Mundy, to discuss forming a group that would reach out to the needs of the community. The church wanted to know how to help the community. Barbara MacAdams is still a member and Babs (Millerd) Ferguson, the first president, re- mains one of the most active members of the intez-denomina- tional group, now grown to about 60 members. If you were ever rescued on a mountain or at sea, or use the craftroom at the West Vancouver Seniors’ Activity Centre or take a YMCA CPR course, the Francescans may have provided some of the equipment involved. Since 1967 they have answered requeits for financial assistance for 64 organizations including Emily ‘Murphy House, North Shore Association for the Physically Handicapped, Co-Pro, North Shore Playcare and North Shore Adult Daycare Centre, West Van- couver Daycare and West. The Francescan organization has been involved from the start in Meals on Wheels, delivering meals and making assessment visits. Out of the Meals on Wheels involve- ment has grown spring luncheons, strawberry teas and the annual Christmas Party. Money is raised to support these projects in a variety of ways. The first project in 1967 was a wig sale and party. Money from this fund- raisiug event paid to have the bell raised at St. Francis. The bell’s pealing had been missed by the community after it had been removed during alterations to the church, Over the following three years, members brought together antique PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENT ON COMPLETE DETAILING e Hand wash waxed » Wheels and tires dressed ¢ Engine shampoo * Interior cleaned and shampooed ¢ ¢ Exterlor Polished & Camauba TOTAL PRICE ALL CARS PLEASE PHONE FOR AN APPOINTHENT UTO DETAILING vehicle appearance specialists 1253 PEMBERTON NORTH VANCOUVER 987-8182 dealers for antique fairs and, although these fairs were a lot of work, they were very popular and profitable.
