& = Wednesday, April 15, 1987 - North Shore News NVTA PRESIDENT SAYS 90% OPPOSE LEGISLATION Teachers support labor laws — MLA MOST TEACHERS are not that strongly opposed to the new government legislation which reduces the power of the B.C. Teachers’ Federation, according to North Van- couver-Capilano MLA Angus Ree. He said local teachers feel they “have to be adverse to the legis’ tion because the BCTF says th, have to be.”’ “The BCTF has become an ac- tive political force against the gov- ernment — Social Credit. We have many teachers who are NDP, so | think the reaction is more political than otherwise,”’ Ree said. But Andy Krawczyk, president of the North Vancouver Teachers’ Association, said he is amazed that Ree would make such a statement when 90 per cent of local teachers have expressed their opposition to B.C.’s proposed new labor laws. Krawczyk said cpposition letters signed by the majority of the association’s 900 members were presented to Ree and North Van- couver-Seymour MLA Jack Davis during a meeting in Victoria Saturday. He said the association has two main concerns about the new legis- lation. Firstly, that principals and vice-principals will become management, thus splitting the BCTF, and secondly, the bill would force teachers to join a Col- lege of Teachers. | Ry XIM PEMBERTON News Reporter The college would take the power away from BCTF by deter- mining teachers’ qualifications; by becoming the profession's disciplinary body; and by ensuring teachers’ continued professional development. Said Ree: ‘‘I think the legislation is good. It gives teachers an oppor- tunity to separate the basic negoti- ated workplace issue from profes- sionalism, At the moment the BCTF seems to do both of them."’ But Krawezyk said it is wrong to set up an industrial relations mode of managers and employers, when all members of staff share in the task of education. “It is sicaply erroneous to what goes on in a school system. The college would also be centralized at the provincial level and there will be far less opportunity for indi- vidual members’ input,’’ Krawczyk said. Ree said he believes North Van- couver teachers are hesitant about WV wants bill rethink AFTER LENGTHY debate, West Vancouver School Board voted 3-2 to send a letter to the provincial government, ask- ing it to consult with groups affected by proposed labor leg- islation before passing bills 19 and 20. Board member Jean Ferguson said the Social Credit government is pushing the pruposals through the legislature too quickly. “If consultation can somehow conciliate the inflammatory situa- tion developing... I think it would serve us better in the long run,’ she told the board.
