lenhance}| | gardens | SINCE ANCIENT times, water has played an impcrtant role in landscape gardening. Water is a natural part of most landscapes but the form it takes may vary. On flat lands, water forms in shallow and placid ponds. In the mountains it is a serics of pools connected by cascades of water. In the desert it is a centre of lush green in a scorched expanse. Rolling hills give rise to soft- edged liquid mirrors with curving banks. These mirrors of nature are beautiful for their own sakes, but also allow the passerby to view the land, sky and sun from a new perspective. The water garden should be used as a direct link between the various elements that make up the land- scape. Just as the pond can be us- ed to draw people to key points in the garden, it can give them a dif- ferent perspective. REFLECTED BEAUTY For example, azaleas are among the most beautiful bloomers of the spring season, but they are usually grown in flower beds where they must be viewed against a background of bare earth. The same shrub reflected in a pool looks entirely different. The blooms can be viewed against the blue of the sky as though they were on a hill top. This iilusion can be worked to good effect in visually expanding the dimensions of a yard. The pond can also be used to vi- sually group landscape elements which could not normully be seen together. The color aid texture of a golden globe cedar cortrasts nicely with the foliage of any ore of the large crimson maples but it is difficult to make such @ contras* because of the relative sizes of the two plants. If the cedar were placed at the near side of the pond and the maple some distance beyond it, the cedar and maple ‘could be viewed side-by-side in the pond. Visual grouping also plays a part in how the pool should be planted. The glossy green lily pads and bright flowers will be set in the middle of your liquid mirror and can be used to brighten otherwise dull views or to add contrast. FIT THE SETTING As a mirror, the pool is an ex- tremely versatile tool to the land- scaper. But the whole effect can be lost if the mirror is not suited to its surroundings. Imagine a natural rockery with the jagged lines of a mountain side broken only by small grottoes of graceful ferns and = spreading cotoneaster, chaotic knots of juniper, cedar, and spruce, and a perfectly square pool. As beautifully constructed as the pool may be — and no matter how well it visually groups and accents the landscaping — it is a jarring departure from the general theme and thereby shatters what would otherwise be an idyllic natural set- ting. A series of roughly shaped pools with connecting water falls would be much more appropriate to the rockery scene. There are very definite styles in gardening and successful landscap- ing generally requires that the styles are not mixed.
