Effective sound control requires three things; resilient supports or connections wuround the enclosure, sound absorbing materials, and leak-free sound barriers. Resilient. supports or connec- tions are necessary because the sound vibritions can be transmit- ted from scund barrier to any ad- joining materials. Resilient caulks such as silicon, or acoustical sealant can be used. Sound absorbing materials, such as fibreglass insulation, are porous and actually transmit sound, but dissipate the energy of the sound waves while doing so. STOP SOUND Sound barriers are usually solid, heavy and non-porous materials that do not transmit sound well. Drywall can be a good sound bar- rier. The sound barrier should be as free of air leaks as possible, because sound can move directly through these holes. Don't ignore electrical outlets and plumbing penetrations. Seal them with caulks or gaskets. If you want to improve the oo soundproofing ability of a com- mon wall between two houses and space is limited, glue a layer of drywall to the existing walls with panel adhesive. Leave a A inch gap at the top and bottom of the drywall. Fill the gaps with caulking and cover with moulding. With more space you can reduce sound transmission further by ad- ding strapping and fibreglass in- sulation. Better yet, use resilient metal channels from drywail or acoustic supply houses, instead of strapping. CONSTRUCTION OPTIONS If you're planning any new con- struction such as a workroom in the basement, you may want to in- corporate sound-stopping features into the new walls. One way is to use 2x4’s stag- gered on 24 inch centres, so that no stud touches drywall on both sides of the partition. A slightly better wall uses 2x4’s and horizon- tally placed metal channels. The drywall attaches to the channels. To stop really loud noises, substitute metal studs for wooden ones, fill the space with insulation ._put your waste on a diet RECYCLE SPECIAL 50% OFF Regular Retail Price 1° Mini Blinds by Roper Vertical Blinds By: Jackson Mon-Fri. 9:00-5:30 Sat. 10:00-5:00 3050 Mountain Hwy.
