The propane leak oc- curred when the driver of a pickup truck hit the brakes and caused the cargo in his. truck to roll forward and break a fit- ting on a 1!00-pound pro- pane tank. The truck was located in the lane behind 127 E. 3rd. Street, but the direc- tion of the wind caused the propane vapors to head to the 200 block Lonsdale. Firefighters, arriving on the scene at 4:45 p.m., noted the large amount of propane spilled and ordered the area be evacuated. Firemen proceeded to disperse the vapors and keep all sources of igni- tion away from the danger area. Within 45 minutes the area was back to normal. Drinking driver caught A DRUNKEN joy ride left a Calgary man in custody Thursday. Alerted by an anonymous caller who said he saw an impaired. driver heading across the Second Narrows Bridge, the North Vancouver RCMP caught up to the Suspect car at 23rd Street and Lonsdale Avenue, where the driver had ran into the back of a vehicle stopped at the light. After a subsequent in- vestigation, police discovered the vehicle was stolen in Vancouver. RCMP arrested two men and later charged 22-year-old Alvin Thomas Raweater, who is being held in custody pending a court ap- pearance. ig Al to trial CKNW sportscaster Allen “Big Af’? Davidson was committed to Vancouver county court Monday to stand trial on three ar- son-related charges. The committal follow- ed five days of prelimi- nary inquiry into the charges ia North Van- couver provincial court. Davidson, 60, faces one count of wilfully set- ting fire to a vessel, one count of wilfully setting a fire likely to cause dam-, age to other vessels, and one count of wilful dam- age in connection with a March 21 incident in which three power boats were damaged by fire at North Vancouver’s Mos- quito Creek Marina. The sportscaster elected trial by judge without jury in the first day of the inquiry Nov. 25. Davidson will appear in Vancouver county court Jan. 18 to set a date for trial. Fire destroys Cove house FOUR PEOPLE escaped uninjured from a fire that destroyed a Deep Cove house Sunday. Dave Soregnson, a guest of second floor te- nants Kenneth and Susan Miller, was awakened by a crackling noise early Sunday morning. Investigating, Soregnson discovered the back door and the rear of the house, including the patio, were on fire. He alerted the Millers, who in turn alerted first floor resident Stephen Wayvon. All four escaped the fire safely. District of North Van- couver firefighters arrived on the scene at 6:25 a.m. to find the house engulf- ed in flames. ° -Fire investigators are searching for the cause of the fire and estimate damage at 375,000.
