When this happens the consumer usually saves these questions for his tire dealer. To assist the dealer plagued with these many and varied customer queries, B.F. Goodrich Canada Inc. has put together ten of the more commonly = asked consumer questions and their answers. 1. How do 1 know if I'm keeping my tires improperly inflated? The only sure way of keeping tires at their proper inflation is to invest a few dollars in an air pressure gauge, and use it to ensure ures are kept at the pressure recommended in the auto- mobile owners manual. Regulators at service stations can be inaccurate by 15 per cent or more. In- flation should be checked when the tire 1s cold, as a tire checked when hot will be under inflated when cold. 2. Do I need radials for my type of dnving? In an energy conscious society, radials should be considered by everyone. Radials offer less rolling resistance. thus saving fuel. Radials also provide supenor handling and stopping ability which could prove beneficial under emergency con- ditions. Radials do have more positive traction than con- ventional bias or belted tires, but are really no substitute for snow tires. In many urban areas, some _ con- sumers might get away without snow tires, but in rural areas where snow removal may not be as regular, radial snow tires can be a worthwhile investment. 5. How important” are conditions such as inflaton and wheel alignment to tire life? Tire inflation, wheel alignment, and tire rotation are major factors in tire life. Their importance cannot be stressed enough. Faulty shock absorbers also result in irregular tire wear. B.F. Goodrich recommends wheel alignment = and suspension components can be inspected every six months. Tires should be rotated periodically ac- cording to the manufac- turer's specification. 6. How much should tire inflation be adjusted when adding load to a vehicle? Tire inflation must be increased in proportion as load is added to a vehicle. It is also wise to check clearance for the larger tires. 8. Can bias ply tires be safely run with radial tires? Ontario recently set new standards for tires; standards that are becoming com- monly recognized throughout the country. Under the regulations, a mixture of radial ply tires on the front and bias or belted- ply tires on the rear is illegal. When not in use, tres should be stored either unmounted, or on wheels at reduced air pressure, in a cool, dry place out of direct sunlight) and away from electric motors. 10. How long can tres be safely run? Most current tires have wear indicators molded in the tread grooves. When the tread is worn to the level of the molded indicator, only two-thirty seconds of an inch of tread is left. Tires should then be replaced.
