A8-Sunday News, November 23, 1980 Dear Editor: Should the North Van- couver Recreation Com- mission be granted per- mission to open a licensed lounge? The Commission is jointly funded by North Vancouver City and North Vancouver District. And since a con- siderable amount of moncy is involved in opening up a bar, it has come to both councils for a handout. The commission and _ its chairman, Alderman James Ball of North Vancouver Vaccine for dog virus scarce Dear Editor: The recent outbreak of Parvovirus Enteritis in dogs has caused some concern among veterinarians and dog owners, and there have been many conflicting reports appearing recently in the press. But both councils are reluctant to rush “into this thing. Neither have any spare cash lying around and there could always be unpleasant political repercussions. This resulted in North Vancouver Distnct council referring the request to the 1981 budget. which will be considered early in the new year. North Vancouver City also deferred a decision pending informauon on where it could find = the vaccine becomes more readily available, vetenn- anans experiencing a higher incidence of the disease in their area may be using the vaccine used to vaccinate cats or mink against distemper. As far as I'm concerned there are several questions that deserve consideration before a final decision: 1. Is a Recreation Centre a proper place for a licensed lounge? 2. Do the citizens of North Vancouver want such a lounge in our Recreation Centre? 3. Are our councils justified in spending money for a licensed lounge when, in the case of our District at least, we have all kinds of other pnorities. 4. How is it that the estimated cost of the lounge keeps going up? Last Sep- tember, for example, the cost of the furniture was estimated at $6,000. Now this has gone up to $21,000. The total cost is now csumated at $52,700. Of this amount North Wancouver District is expected to put up $34,225. When this matter came before our council, | insisted that a public information meeting be held so that (a) 449 E. 3rd St. N.V. 24 HRS. My proposal was rejected by Council, with Alderman Peter Powell angrily demanding hat I “stop playing games. I don't think it's: playing games to insist that the people who pay the bills be given all relevant in- formation. The public has a right to know. Why all this Opposition to a public in- formation meeting? Has someone something they want to hide? It’s not “our” money that we're spending; it belongs to the people. This is why I'll continue to insist that we have a public information meeting to air this whole issue. Let the ciuzens of North Vancouver District decide who, if anyone, is playing games.
