(from the Motorcycle and auto THE SKID MARK Moped Industry council) Gas price rise hurts bike sales Rising .gas prices are causing a decline in the sales of minibikes and other off- road vehicles, and a corresponding increase in the number of street bikes sold, according to recent sales figures. Over half the motorcycles sold by manufacturers to dealers were streetbikes in the first half of 1980. In 1977 streetbikes only accounted for 39.2 per cent of sales. Dual-purpose bikes, street legal but suitable for field and trail riding, then ac- counted for 27.4 per cent of the market. In 1980 sales of these bikes were down to 12.8 per cent, while minibike sales declined from 19.1 to 11.2 per cent. Industry analysts believe the decline in mini and dual- purpose bike sales is due to the fuel inefficiency of these vehicles. Streetbikes are far more fuel efficient. LOOKING FOR TRUSTWORTHY AUTO B7-Wednesday, July 16, 1980 - North Shore News Motorbike theft getting harder Motorcycle manufac- turers are making it. more difficult for bike thieves these days, says a spokesman for the Motorcycle and Moped Industry ~ Coun- cil(MMIC). Bike makers are producing more key patterns for each bike model, con- cegling wiring behind dif- ficult-to-remove panels, and eliminating visible key - identification on locks. — But Walt Mackay, technical director for the MMIC, says the key ' to theft prevention still rests with the bike owners. Owners must make use of the theft-prevention devices the manufacturers install, he says. It’s also a good idea to purchase special security accesories available from bike dealers. Along devices like ignition locks, fork locks and key-operated battery disconnects, Mackay Suggests using case- hardened chains or alloy chains. Motorbikes should be secured to signposts or parking meters by U-shaped Shackle locks. Rear axle locks should be obtained as well, says Mackay. These have the advantage of being incorporated as a permanent part of the motorcycle, he says. Other Mackay various systems, security devices mentions are electronic alarm loud buzzers and with built-in | horns to attract attention to the thief, and pocket pager systems to warn owners their bikes are being tampered with, — (HOLLANDS AUTO REPAIR Tune-Ups Brakes Carburetion Exhaust system General maintenance Let me be your personal mechanic 830 W. ist St. Just southeast of Woolco 988-5010 Marine Dr. Hollands W ist Prevent ansmiussio tro le 4445 includes new fluid ® Road test @ Remove pan ® Visual inspection eClean sump & screen* e Adjust bands & linkage ° e Replace pan gasket & fluid We fix transmissions because we know how.
