Jazz fest opener Holly Cole

Mi Holly Cole opens the du Maurier International Jazz Festival
tonight at the Crpheum, showtime 8 p.m.

I had read about Holly Cole’s new hobby. But I was
unprepared for the rabid, fanatical manner in which
she enthused about the drums: her new CD, the jazz
fest, ali else was forgotten as she raved about her all-
consuming passion. ;
“Pm a drummer now,” Cole’s eyes light up as ¢he calls me, as we
. sit ina funky Yaletown eatery. “You should see my nc se. My whole
house is a drum room.”
She stubs out her cigarette purposefully, as if she will break into a

table-edge drum solo at any moment.
Cole insists she regularly spends more than eight hours a day

anniversary this year

of adventurous pro-

Every summer jazz fans
have been given the oppor-
tunity to see the likes of
Ornette Coleman, Sun Rs,
John Zorn, Miles Davis, and
the Master Musicians of
Joujouka on stage. Some
musicians return regularly to
fill us in on what they've
been up to while other disap-
pear for awhile before recon-
necting.
