Once moisture is in the home it vaporizes into warm humid air that travels in path- ways, such as holes for light switches, as it is pulled to cool- er areas of the house. When this warm air hits a cooler surface such as 2 win- dow, the underside of a roof, or an uninsulated wall the vapour condenses and water is formed. Moulds thrive in this wet, low-light environment, feeding on the organic matter in build- ing matenals such as wood and drywall, Many North Shore attics never sve us have a 50% off or frame 3 for the price of 2 sale. Looking at the utility bills can help, but did you know there is an unbiased rating system that can com- pare the energy efficiency of similar Canadian homes? Would you be interested in a program that could help you make the older house you just fell in love with more comfortable — and economical to heat next win- ter? The federal government’s new EnerGuide for House Program is now available through energy professionals across Canada. A trained technician will visit your home to collect dara on its structure, insula- tion levels and heating and cooling systems, and to per- form a “blower door test” to find energy-wasting air leaks. The data is analyzed using data-modelling soft- ware produced by Natural Resources Canada, and is used to prepare a report and a label thar rates your home’s energy efficiency on a scale of zero to 100. The report shows you how and where you can eas- ily include energy-saving options in future renova- tions. The label shows how your house compares to oth- ers in the region and across Canada. Owners of homes with a high energy-efficiency rating can use it to realize their investment in energy improvements through the:r home’s increased _ resaie value. Homeowners who have received lower ratings for their homes have used the report recommendations to incorporate energy efficiency improvements in their reno- vation plans. These energy efficiency upgrades will reduce their energy bills, improve she comfort of their homes, and earn them a revised energy- efficiency rating.
