Upstart Finley Quaye riles the status quo

Quaye, Sony 1998

British newcomer Quaye starts strong
tight out of the gate with his debut
release. Born in northern England, of
Scontish and Ghanian descent, he comes
on like a fashion-plate rastaman. Quaye
doesn’t fit easily into any categories and
that upsets purists of every persuasion. His
magnificent band back him up in dread-
locks and white suits.

The mixed messages have led more
than a few people — Britain’s Nev-
Musical Express claim he’s a phony, and
gave him a thumbs-down review, Tricky
(Quaye claims they're related) put out a
pur-down bootleg 12-inch Cant Solec
disclaiming any association with the
younger singer.

But after all the nonsense what's lett is
the songs. State-of-the-art contemporary
groove music bringing reggae straight into
the heart of mainstream pop culture with-
out losing any of its edge.

by releasing Divine Divas — a
3 CD compilation of more
than 40 women performers
from around the world.

The collection is in fact. a follow-up to
Global Divas which came out three years
ago. That 3 CD boxed set was the first of
its kind and commemorated the United
Nations Fourth World Conference on
Women held in Beijing, Caina in
September, 1995. The new one picks up
where the first one Fett off

Producer Brooke Wentz has used this
second series of recordings to showcase
some lesser known singers. While the
1995 Global Divas fearures all-time best-
sellers such as Edith Piaf, Aretha Franklin,
Oum Khalthom and Patsy Nine, the new
package concentrates on fess-familiar
nantes from older generations (Haiti's
Toto Bissainthe) plus new performers just
establishing their careers Gabulous Launo
superstar [a India).

Even longtime fans of the performers
will want to check out this compiladon
yerics as the songs are not necessarily taken

The soundtrack for Robert Redford’s lat-
est film provides an excellent introduction
to a cross-section of contemporary country
artists. Performers include Texas’ reformed
Fladanders (Joe Ely, Butch Hancock and
Jimmie Dale Gilmore), Dwight Yoakam,
Iris DeMent, Steve Earle and George
Strait. There are no weak links bur some of
the standouts include Emurytou Harris’
rendition of a new Chris Smither’s tune
Slow Surprise, Gillian Welch's Leaving
Train from her forthcoming album; and
Lucinda Williams’ Still 1 Long For Your
Kiss, produced by Tony Brown. Yoakam
contributes Tex Owens’ 1943 Carile Call
to keep everybody honest. Great package
of songs.
