On Wednesday, the district launched its bid for the 1998 Nations in Bloom competition. And it’s a good thing she did, because there is lots to do. Unlike the provincial and national, competitions, in which the judges visit the par- _ticipating municipalities, in the international version, the competitors must first submic “a written application, then . send an illustrated manuscript vand a video presentation for “judging. The district will find. gut at the end of the summer it has qualificd.to send its submission to Ai Ain in the United Arab Emirates where the judging will rake place. The submission is expected to cost about $50,000. A Nations in Bloom committee has already started fundraising efforts. For those who wish to take part in other ways, a Community Clean Up will kick off the competition efforts on April 25 and 26. Residents are encouraged to organize a crew with neigh- bors and collect litter, garbage and green waste trom streets, sidewalks, Janes, alleys and elsewhere. The waste can then be dropped off at local P. and Rides or at Fire Hall No. 3 in Caulfeild. To get involved in the effort call Ve rrity Goodier at 926-6696.
