But who honors the single mom? Ultimately, she must look after herseli, said Nancy Ford. a certified counsellor and North Vancouver resident. “We need to ask ourselves what we like and make thar happen,” said Ford. Ford facilitates a support group for single mothers. The grour meets Thursday evenings ac North Shore Neighbourhood House. Funding for the group is pro- vided by North Shore Women’s Centre, with spon- sorship from the YWCA. Participants are young mothers and mature mothers, never married and newly divorced, on social assistance and financially stable. They gain support from each other because their issues are the same, said Ford. Topics of discussion include selationships, finances and parenting styles. Around Mother’s Day, the talk invariably turns to the commercialism and material expectations that surround holidays and traditions. Single mothers reed to know they can establish new rituals for themselves and their families, said Ford. The mother of a voung child may spend the day with another single mom. Or “take herself out and treat herself in whatever way that she can — a foor massage, a bubble bath, some incense or a new set of rools.” The YWCA celebrates the single mother Saturday, May 30, with a day of workshops and social activities. Organizers are calling the conference, the YWCA's 20th annual, Single Mother’s Day. The focation is the YWCA Program Centre, 535 Howe St., Vancouver. Activities are from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Ford will be there to facil- itate a discussion on the “father issue,” dealing with issues of visitation, parenting, styles, present relationships, guilt and expectations. The registration fee, including child care, is $40. Subsidies are available to qualified participants.
