Did you know, B.C's Children's Hospital Emergency Department was built to care for a maximum of 50 children each day. but now. the Department sees an average 100 children each day? ALEXANDER Maier is not impressed by vandals who tore up a portion of the North Vancouver cemetery, the resting place of his two granddaughters. Grandfather mad at grave vandais Robert Gaister News Reporter robert@nsncws.com ALEXANDER Maier doesn’t need any more grief in his life. The 77-year-oid gor enough to last a lifetime on July 14, 1990, when his rwo granddaughters were killed im: a motor vehicle accident on the corer of Berkeley Road and Mt. Seymour Parkway. Seven years later, the memories of Lisa and Linda remain just as strong in their grandfather’s mind. Maier continues to place flowers at the site of the acci- dent and visits the girls’ graves every one or two wecks. On Nov. 7, he placed some flowers on the graves, burt was shocked upon his return last Friday to find not just their graves disturbed, but most of the lower por- tien of the cntire North Young drunks likely cause of destruction Vawouver cemetery. Maier attributes the cause of the damage to “kids doing wheelies. “I would just love ro catch the kids that do it because it’s just willful destruction,” said Maier. It’s not the first time something like this has hap- pened. He said two years ago a reckless vandal even man- aged to damage head stones. Then, this past spring, kids returned to wreak more havoc on the final resting ground of many North Shore residents. “They must have gotten stuck in there because the ruts were a foot deep,” said Maier. “The grass is stili cormng back from that one and now this. “It just makes you won- der what kind of people live in this world,” he lamented. According to North Vancouver RCMP Const. Tom Seaman, Maier is most likely correct in his assump- tion that kids are at the root of the problein. “It’s certainly not senior citizens,” said Seaman. “It’s more likely young people, probably under 20, probably intoxicated and probably not very inrelli- gent.” Seaman added vandalism at the cemetery is not a reg- war occurrence though he confirmed it has happened before. The = perpetrators are rarely caught because they are rarely spotted at the time. “Ir sure makes us wonder what people are thinking when they damage proper- ty,” he said. Key to success.
