north shore news MAIL Box | Rescuers of puppy applauded Dear Editor: Very carly on a recent Sunday morn- ing, my husband and I returned home tired and happy from a dinner dance. . The first order of business was to take our puppy for the late evening nature ‘avalk. We always use a leash — except that time. Something scared the puppy and he was off with us in pursuit. We looked until 3:30 a.m. thinking the worst. Two of our four children were up searching with us and we all dreaded telling the younger two in the morning. - > We ealled the SPCA and registered “our missing treasure on its answering ser- vice and went to bed — not to sleep. Qur phone rang at 9:05 a.m. omeone had our puppy, safe and sound. ‘Tears of joy and relief took over. Our story had a happy ending. What makes it better is the commitment that the rescuers had made to this unknown little creature. At 1] am! they were driving up Mountain Highway and our puppy, look- ing to them like a. lamb, was crashing trom carb to curb dodging cars. They jumped out of their car, stopped traffic and finally caught the terrified puppy before driving through the neigh- borhood for half an hour looking for someone who looked as though they were looking for a lost puppy. In the early morning they tcok the pup to the local coffee shop to see if per- haps he would be recognized by the sleepless owners — no luck. Then off to the shops to buy special puppy food since they only had their adult dog’s food. Then, they found the information they needed from the SPCA and we connect ed. They made no mention of the messed floors and the noisy night, but rather were just delighted at reuniting the pup with our family. Every so often the gravel beach of life reveals a diamond, and it happened for us on Sunday morning. The Cousins family and puppy are thankful for the kindness shown to them by these good people. No -single-occupant_ vehi- es on the Lions Gate bridge uring rush hours. - I've noticed, as I wait for ybus‘in the morning, that ebetween 80% and 90% of all f passenger cars ‘that pass rac ave but one occupant. T'think about my job “downtown and the jobs of eople I know and how we er liy. ‘don’ t need our vehicles we're at work. (There city buses you know.) I. wonder what ail these i People do for a living. Maybe they’ré secret agents. who -have® to be ready on a moment’s notice to leap into ptheir Bimmers or Boxsters to ‘sidiarics — Maybe they’ re aliens with four arms whose sole pur- pose is to pollute the planet to death and use it as a dumping ground for their waste. Their job is to drive back and forth across the Lions Gate Bridge all day and all night causing volume delays, the add accident, pollution and an increase in the value of their wholly owned sub- Cantel and Starbucks. . I appreciate the lunacy of my suggestion, however. After all it would require one to talk to one’s neighbor about riding to work togeth- er. Worse still, it would require one to actually speak to another person for up to 30 minutes, twice a day. How could one be expect- ed to do that when you could talk to your left hand instead. You don’t have to talk to your TV or your computer — why should you be expected to talk to a virtual stranger. What is there to talk about anyway? As to the alternative — taking a bus — well, someone might see you! No, on reflection, it prob- ably wouldn't work. The better solution is to spend enough money to run a'small country, build anoth- er bridge so that we can all line up on a bigger and newer crossing, continue to talk into our left hands, drive with our knees and wonder who - those idiots are who stand in the rain waiting for those ugly buses.
