"Ackert likes the goddess association the store name con- jures even though i it’s actually a playful: turn on the name of designer and store owner Jana (pronounced Yah-nah) Kalous. ‘An:.unfamiliar name out West, the Czech-born Kalous is well known on the design scene in. Ottawa, where she makes her home and has had a shop for 10 years. She's also opened a boutique on Montreal’s fash- ionable Rue St. Denis. ‘Kalous designs the textiles as well’as the garments, and lives, part of the year in Indonesia to oversee their pro- duction. .. Primitive partes and rich colors reflect a variety of tech- niques including batik and block. printing and sponge painting. Design details are subre yer distinctive like a jack- et that splits down the back or a short summer dress with a handkerchief hem. The garments, says Ackert, are “things people can live in — wear to the grocery store, the opera and everything in between.” Many garments are a com- tortable one-size-fits-all. and most of the designs are limited to just a handful of pieces. So chances are slim you'll see your outfit on someone else. eter - Pareeaere G Kallyana designs have their own personalities, says operations manag- er Karina Ackert (above). Some are sub- dued, some are bright and cheery. All rofiect the distinctive style of Ottawa-based design- er/store owner Jana Kalous.
