AT Ridgeway Elementary

School in Novth Vancouver
there is a quiet, shady space
known as The Refuge.

Its creation began more than seven
years ago when students, parents and
teachers worked to create a wild space
in an unused courtyard of the school.
Filled with trees, plants, paths and a
pond, The Refitge has become an out-
door classroom, a resource for teachers
and students when learning about the
natural world,

This year at Highlands Elementary
School, also in North Vancouver, stu-
dents, teachers, parents and local busi-
nesses pitched in to begin creation of
an outdoor classroom, Phase one is a
butterfly garden, The first bright-
winged residents were released earlier
in May,

date is to bring information and train
ing to help. parents, school staff and
communities bring nature back to
their school grounds.

More than 60 birdhouses in total
will be auctioned off in an urban oasis
created at the newly opened gallery in
the Roundhouse Community Centre
at False Creek on May 29.

Wild in the Cityis to combine a mix
of a silent and live auction, gourmet
organic food and live entertainment.

Selected birdhouses are now on
display at five Lower Mainland
Starbucks coffee house locations. The
Ambleside Starbucks is currently dis-
playing the birdhouse created by
Charmaine Crooks and Katarina
Thorsen,

Other birdhouses will be on display
at Hills of Kerrisdale, the Jennifer
Whitman Gallery and Bollum’s Rooks
on Granville. They'll remain at these
