Trying times Dear Editor: My name is David Wilson and I, like so many other Canadians at one time or another became involved in the absurd bureaucracy of the federal government. I am currently unemployed and involved in a retraining pro- gram through the federal gov- ernment. I have been unem- ployed since Dec. 27, 1996. I became entitled to Unemployment Insurance cheques three weeks later. I have received only one cheque for one week, amount totaling $162. UI issued two more cheques on Feb. 11, totalling $324 for the previous two weeks of entitlement. To this date, I have not seen these two cheques. UI has a policy of sending all cheques through Canada Post. They will not issue any cheques over the counter, no matter what the emergency. I _ have paid the first two weeks of my rent for February, burt I still need to pay for the rest of February and the first two weeks of March. My rent is *. $360 per month. I continual- ly have to borrow to pay my rent so that my landlord will ‘not evict me from my home. How much more I will be able to borrow remains a mys- tery, but eventually I will run out of lenders and then I will _ be forced out on the street. . When anyone purchases a stainp and places it on a letter for delivery through the post office; and the post office picks up this mail, a contract has just been entered into. . ‘The post office is now oblig- --ated’to deliver this piece of mail to the address on the envelope in as short a time as possible ensuring that the let- ter is received in good condi- tion. The same thing is true when a person buys a Lotto 649 ticket. If the numbers on “the ticket match the numbers drawn then the federal gov- ernment is by law forced to pay the ticker holder the prize money. But what happens when the post office does not fulfill its legal obligations to ‘the sender. ‘Nething happens it seems. The post office hasn’t deliv- ered my cheques sent by the Ul office. If I do not reccive my cheques from UI sent through the post office, I will be forced to leave my residen- cys and [ will still have no money to buy food. Do you Fine work fish folks Dear Editor: Now everybody's after beatin’ on the federal fisheries branch, but you gotta know, those fellers is doin’ alright! I mean look at it... it took *em_50 years to kill the cod fishery back east, but by jingo they'll be able to kill off the Pacific salmon in maybe, 25 years, tops. Now if that’s not an improvement, well I don't know what is. Dan Collins North Vancouver fora think the postal employees care ‘much about my dilem- ma? I don’t. However, if it were their cheques that had not been delivered to them, then there would probably be walkouts and total chaos. Ail 1 want is the cheques that I am entitled to so that I can pay my rent and buy food. If that is too much to ask then Tam really sorry. I paid into unemployment insurance, and thus Fam entitled to it. [hope someone in the government with some input will read this letter and act. How many other U.l. recipients in this country are inthis terrible predicament? Why do we as Canadians have to send our first class mail through the post office? There are plenty of efficient private companies that are more than capable of fulfilling the role of delivering first class mail on time and in great shape.
