WHO TO GALL: a Auto Editor @ A.P. McCredie | 985-2131 am 3) te ONLI we se IT WAS only two years ago that North America’s third ‘largest car company, Chyrsler, introduced the much anticipat- ed LH series of family sedans, By David Chao Contributing Writer Before the debut, automotive critics and industry specialists took tums offering their predictions as to how Chrysler would fare in the ever- competitive automotive market. Skeptics commented that LH sedans stood for “Last Hope,” and that Chrysler would eventually dis- appear from the face of this earth. Others doubted Chrysier’s ability to compete with the Japanese. They were wrong —~ dead wrong. Today, there isn't a single person in the automotive industry that would voice questionable remzrks about Chrysler’s strength. In fact, most people now agree that Chrysler is one of the most promis- ing stars in the world of automo- biles, So-what does this progressive company have under its belt for 1995? First, Chrysler wil] attempt to establish itself as a true alternative to Japanese cars with the all-new ’ Cirrus compact sedan. Chrysler's new range of compact cars will venture into a segment cur- rently dominated by such best sellers as the Nissan Altima, Honda Photo submitted THE NEW Chrysifer Avenger repiaces the old Daytona model and borrows styling cues from the Viper and the Stealth. Accord, and Toyota Camry. The Cirrus boasts Chrysler's famous cab-forward design, and as a result, offers a surprising amount of space inside its stick, stylish body. Equipped with a Mitsubishi-derived 2.5-litre V-6 und Honda-like double wishbone suspension, the Cirrus dri- ves, handles, rides, and feels more like a Mazda 626 or Honda Accord than any other American sedan. With the base model costing about $22,000 and the fully- equipped, leather-seat version top- ping out at $25,000, the Cirrus undercuts import cars by a few thou- sand doliars. Following the debut of the Cirrus is a new entry in the sports coupe segment: Dodge Avenger. The Avenger replaces the old Daytona model and shows off many styling cues from other Dodge cars, includ- ing the monstrous Viper and high- tech Stealth sports cars. With a front-wheel-driven chas- sis borrowed from Mitsubishi's Eclipse sports car and Galant sedan, the Avenger is poised to fight against cars such as the Nissan 240SX, Honda Accord coupe, and Mazda MX-6. Buyers will have a number of DAVE BUCK FORD HAVE engine/transmission choices to select from on the new Avenger, including a Chryster-designed 2,0-litre DOHC four-banger and 155-horsepower 2.5-litre V-6 unit. With a practical trunk and smooth styling that doesn’t say “I'm hot and mean.” the Avenger and Sebring are both designed to cater to a slightly more mature crowd, Are there more new models for “95? You bet. The highly popular Dodge and Plymouth Neon models are adding a sportier two-door coupe version. The coupe model shares much of its components with the fun-to-drive, “smiling” Neon four-door, including the peppy 2.0-litre engine and all- around athletic suspension. The Neon coupe, however, adds an extra spice to the lineup with the availability of a high-output version of the 2.0-litre Chrysler engine. On the truck side, Dodge intro- duces an extended cab version of the Ram full-size truck, which features true six-passenger seating. With so many promising models coming, [ think we can safely say that the code “LH” actually stands for “Lots of Hope.” uD - OWNERS - WATCH THIS SPACE FOR NEWS OF GREAT BENEFIT US, YOU, COMING SOON.
