The four-door Accent is a notch-
back sedan body style with a 303
liter trunk and fold-down rear seats
on GL modefs.

Compared to the Excel. the
Accent’s passenger compirtinent is
bigger while the overall vehicle
length has shrunk, The Accent
sedan is 16.3 cm (G.4 in.) shorter
overall than the Excel, but $.7 em
(.7 in wider, 2A em Chine
taller, and has a wheelbase that is
1.7 em longer. Front and rear pas-
sengers have more headroom and
slightly more efbowroom and
legroom than in the Excel.

It's interesting to note that both
the two-door model and the rour-
door model have the same wheel-
base — 2,400 mimi (94.5 in.)

The Accent’s performance,
though not exciting, has improved
over the Excel. A combination of a
new 1.5-litre four-cylinder engine
with 13% more horsepower and a
lighter curb weight have improved
straight line acceleration consider-
ably. Zero to 100 km-h (62 m.p.h.)
now takes 13.2 seconds with the
optional four-speed automatic
transmission.

The Accent’s new 92 horsepow-
er 1.5-litre “Alpha” engine was first
introduced in the Scoupe in 1993,
and offers some technical advances
over the Accent's previous, slightly
smaller engine. The Alpha engine
has three valves per cylinder for
better engine breathing, a distribu-
torless ignition system, mainte-
nance-free hydraulic valve adjus-
tors, and an improved electronic
engine management computer with
knock control.

Fusl economy has also been
improved by about 5%, according
to Transport Canada estimates. The
1.5-litre Alpha engine delivers 8.5
litres per 100 kilometres in urban
driving (32 m.p.g.), and 5.8 litres
per 100 kilometres on the highway
(47 m.p.z.).

A five-speed manual transmis-
sion with easy but long throws is
standard equipment on all Accents.
A four-speed automatic with push-
button Power and Economy modes
is optional.

Engine speed at highway cruis-
ing speeds is quite relaxed, but the
engine is a tad noisy under hard
acceleration. There doesn't cppear
to be a lot of sound insulation in
this car. ;

The Accent’s stronger body
structure, combined with a new
independent suspension, gives it a
solid, stable ride with more bounce
control and improved steering
response. McPherson struts in front
and a rear multi-link setup and sta-
bilizer bar make the Accent a more
fun-to-drive car than the Excel ever
was. However, the skinny 155/80R-
13 inch radial tires on the base
model limit handling somewhat.

The Accent’s interior is better
finished than the Excel and offers
easy-to-read gauges and controls, a
good driving position, and good
outward visibility. Dual airbags and
ABS brakes are now available as an
option, however. you cannot order
just a driver's side airbag - you
must order both airbags or none.
Airbags are available or all models,
but ABS and sunroof are available
onty on GL models.

Power assisted steering and a tilt
steering Wheel are stindard equip-
menton all but the base jvo-door
“LO model. Two-door "GL" models
of ora standard AM/FM radio with
no cassette player, while four-door

madels get ian AM/FM cassette.

One improvement on the new
Accent was developed especially
for Canada. The wiper motor has
more torque and the wiper blade is
longer to cope with the severity of
Canadian winters.
