GVRD chases fed tax change THE GREATER Vancouver Regional District (GVRD) board of directors will encour- age the federal government to amend its taxation policy on donations of park land. The board decided to take action after a land owner was discouraged from donating property to the regional district because of inade- quate tax compensation, The land in question was sought by the GVRD as part of its newly established Granite Falls Regional Park in Indian Arm. Federal tax policies seem to deter the donation of environmen: tally sensitive land for park and wildlife purposes. Currently, donations can be sub- ject to capital gains tax, and are not given the same tax treatment as cul- tural heritage donations. In addition, people who donate lo federal or provincial govern- ments are allowed to deduct the value of the gift up to 100% of tax- able income. Donations to municipatities, regional districts and charitable foundations are allowed only a 20% reduction of taxable income. As a result, the National Round Table on the Environment and many Canadian environmental organizations are secking changes in federal Gin laws, JAMES POYNER Lawyer MAJOR PERSONAL INJURY Free initial Consultation 988-632 1 408-145 Chadwick Court N.
