The bad news is that Turnberry’s
Ailsa course, where the Open takes
place, will be closed for play after
June 19.

So what you need is a plin to
see something of Scotland before
the Open, you need a bed during the
event, and then you want to be on
that Ailsa course the day after the
Open. The thing to do is fy into
Glasgow (I took one of British
Airways’ daily flights trom
Vancouver to London and the shut-
tle to Glasgow) and rent a car.
Getting around Scotland by road is

easy and you'll be amazed how
quiet the raads are compared to the
rest of Europe.

If you're feeling flush, stay at
Cameron House on Loch Lomond,
a beautiful spot just 20 minutes
from the airport. The hote! has its
own 9-holer and there are many
other courses around.

If you’re on a budget, slay ata
bed and breakfast and eat in pubs;

_, bar meals area bargain and more
"are offering bigger menus with
. healthy dishes.

Put something aside. however,

for the delightful Open Arms at
: Dirleton, near Edinburgh, which
has just seven bedrooms, a famous

dining room and a family proprietor
of the old school, Arthur Neil.
Linger here and sample the [2
courses within 15 minutes* drive,
and 120 within 40 miles. They
range from Open venues such as
Muirficld ($100 a round) to links
where you'll] have a great day for
$20,

When it's time fora change,
drive across Scovand (all of two
hours) to link up with the new ferry
from Ardrossan to the Isle of Arran,
The car ferry Caledonian Isles takes
in hour to reach one of Scotland's
pretiiest islands.

The big draw here is sightseeing,
for Arran is rich in heather-covered
mountains and giens, although for
the dedicated golfer there are seven
courses. These are not champi- °
onship links, rather sporty tracks
which welcome children, and where
the clubhouses are always con-
vivial.

Arran has a wide range of digs,
from the gracious Auchrannie coun-
try house in Brodick to the Grange
House B & B at Whiting Bay, a
handsome house with sea views and
a good table.

By now you should be rested
and ready for the formidabie
Ayrshire links courses such as
Royal Troon, Prestwick and
Turnberry.
