SORRY, dear reader, to bore — or, as the case may be, ; horrify — you once more about the Infants Act, ‘Blame, Lonsdale MLA David Schreck. Like a puppy chewing its first bone, Mr. Schreck (MAILBOX, ' Jan. 24) loves his government's amended law. He regards it as a juicy NDP contribution to our shrinking menu of family values. He won't have Wright-the- Wrong-One messing with the rec- ipe. .. And yes, David Schreck — the almost, incomprehensible gob- bledygook with which government lawyers earn their fat salaries DID catch me out on two technicalities. But let’s spare our audience any _ more ‘‘Section 16(1)"’ and “‘Sec- - tion 16(4)’* nonsense before their eyes glaze over completely. Let's at least agrce on what it all boils down to. Under the old Act infants aged ' 0-15 could go on their own toa doctor or dentist for treatment without asking mum or dad. Right? But 16- to 18-year-olds — the “likeliest to avail themselves of such freedom — couldn’t get away with it quite so easily. In THEIR case, the doc or dentist had to ‘make ‘‘a reasonable ef- fort’? to get parental consent or else must obtain a second profes- sional opinion. Right? .— Under the amended Act exactly. ; the same freedom that the 0-15s have always had now applies to’ the 16- to 18-year-olds. For them’ £00, no more bothering now about “reasonable efforts" or second | opinions. . mo, All the “health care provider"? i must do is ‘‘be satisfied’? that the . 7 kid understands what the treat-. ‘ment means and “‘conciude’’ that: said treatment will be good for the | kid. Right? = * - And | that “health care pro-" : HITHER AND ‘YON 7 _ vider’ seed 2'No longer just a doc- tor or dentist. As’ ‘YOU agree, David, it now means “‘any person licensed, certified or registered’’ to provide. ‘therapeutic, preven- tative, diagnostic, cosmetic or’ other health related” treatment including ‘‘a course of health. care."’ That" $ what, the amended Act says... “4 ‘So now add psyche ogists, « “nature healers, ‘counsellors ,"": therapists, beauticians, teache: "and you-name-’em. isn’t this “ something new for ALL. “infants” -— not only the 16- to 18-year. olds? -. 5 Of one thing Mr. Schrec convinced me. Parents. have deed lost'no rights ‘regardin children under. 16 to doctors and : dentists — simply because’ ‘they'd - already lost those rights under the / ,old- Acti Under the amendment they “now, in effect,'lost their’ rights re ~ garding’ children of ALL ages to. “any potential quack who man: “to set, up a legal “health care’? “observe ae sthtcal standards But who now ’ guards our kids “psychological abuse by the ND mst new army ‘of. so-all “the ora pai st fe “DAVID SCHRECK.... hunting 1 for _ Weight-wrongs, ‘ back - in, San Bernardino. - v school’s handsome 1 a oP Adsim Exner ‘Lin the Hotel‘ ‘Vancouver.
