North Vancouver will receive $10.7 million from federal and provincial governments to help fund the development, construction and demonstration of a 10-kW power plant and the components for a 200-kW power plant. A 50-kW prototype power plant will be set up at Mohawk Oil in North Vancouver. The power plants will use fuel cells developed by Ballard. The power plants will use hydrogen ‘reformed’? from natural gas. The fuel cells combine hydrogen | and air to produce electricity simi- lar 10 a conventional storage bat- tery. Iotron Industries will receive a $2.3 million loan from the federal government’s Western Economic Diversification program. “This new facility will play an important role in the development of British Columbia's health care sector,”’ said Western Economic Diversification minister Charles Mayer. “It will encourage medical pro- ducts manufacturers to establish plants here and reduce the huge volume of imported products from Europe, the U.S. and Asia’’.
