HOME & GARDEN PNE home light and airy WARMTH, LIGHT, spaciousness... these are the hallmarks ‘of this year’s Prize Home at Vancouver's Pacific Na- tional Exhibition. Built by Chaparral Industries of Kelowna, B.C.*s largest producer of modular homes, the Prize Home combines traditional luxury with the most modern factory-building techniques. And it has already won high praise from its interior designer. The 2,300 square-foot home is the first PNE Prize Home to be designed by the winner of an ar- chitectural design contest, award- ed to David Love of Raymond Ching Architects in Vancouver. The winning design was tendered to modular builders who could meet stringent PNE, Quality Plus, and BC Hydro Power Smart criteria. ‘Because it’s built in our fac- tory, the home is fabricated under a program of strict quality control and protected from adverse weather,’* says Ted Sommerfield, Chaparral president. ‘Efficient factory building means cost sav- ings and speedy construction. We've Mt over 660 homes the last dev .-iv. largely customized to our clig'.:. ishes.’” Award-winning designer Peter Garrett of Vancouver, who pro- duced the home’s interior design, calls it a ‘‘lovely home. Theze is a tremendous sense of space, light and openness, yet there’s aiso privacy. It's an elegant but casual environment. The took combines traditional and modern elements, and there is a strong theme of southern California and the southwest, reinforced by the clay tile roof. Everything blends together nicely.” The light, airy feeling derives from the vaulted, angular ceilings; the skylights; large corner win- dows that extend 13 feet up io the ceiling; and a color scheme of peach, soft taupe, and pale greens. Home features include three bedrooms; three bathrooms; a powder room, living room, and a den/study; built-in inter- com/stereo, vacuum and security systems; a double gas fireplace and plant bcidge that separate the family and dining rooms; and a master bedroom ensuite with sunken jetied tub, shower, skylights, and glass-block wall. The bridge, a key part of the park’s trail system, was recently closed for a number a days while interim repairs were carried out. Officials are now considering whether to rebuild the existing structure or replace it with a new crossing in the same area, which would be built to handicapped- access standards. The cost of replacement is estimated at $150,000. The home is surrounded by decks for indoor and outdoor living, and contains what Garrett calls “tons of closet space."’ Garrett has designed over 1,700 model homes for developers in Canada and the U.S., including “Street of Dreams’’ models for a number of West Coast cities, and has had his work featured in Ar- chitectural Digest and Sunset magazines. Garrett received the prestigious Alumnus of Distince- tion Award from San Francisco State University. Comprised of seven separate modules or sections, the house was fabricated in Chaparral’s 36,000 square-foot Kelowna plant and delivered to the PNE grounds by special air-float trailers. The prize home will be relocated to the Brookside subdivision in Surrey after the winner’s name is drawn at the close of the fair. a MASON ‘SEWING uae co. P.N.E.
