By ELIZABETH COLLINGS News Reporter “If you know how to put the makeup on, it looks like clothes. It’s not revealing. Only when you get close, you see her naked, more or less,"* McGuire says. Actually, the modeis wear G- Strings and bikini tops for decen- cy’s sake but after five laborious hours of head-to-toe painting with grease and water paints, it’s dif- ficult to distinguish body parts from body adornment. McGuire, who lives in North Van- couver, first saw 3 body painting competition on a trip to her native Italy. Along with her mother, Rita Dominelli, McGuire brought competitive body painting to Van- couver four years ago. McGuire took first prize in 1986 with a traditionally dressed bride and a tuxedo-toting groom. In subsequent years, winning designs have included a peacock in full plumage and a walking totem pole. The competition is a chance for makeup artists, hair dressers and estheticians to show the extent of their talent and creativity, usually limited in their day-to-day work. One year an artist portrayed a mummy which was well-executed, the Holiday Season The Davina Collection but a bad choice of subject nonetheless. “She did excellent work but it was too ugly. It looked like a dead person coming out of a coffin,” McGuire says. This year’s competition promises to be the biggest yet.
