20 - Wednesday, June 24, 1987 - North Shore News President accepts second term at DR. WILLIAM Saywell has agreed to serve a second term as president and vice-chancellor of Simon Fraser University. President Saywell’s new ap- pointment is for six years, beginn- ing Sept. 1. He came to SFU in the fall of 1983 for a five-year term. Fred Moonen, chairman of the university’s board of governors, says: ‘‘Dr. Saywell has shown outstanding leadership during his first term, a period which was characterized by considerable dif- ficulty due to economic restraint. The board was very pleased to have a president of Dr. Saywell’s calibre agree to sign up for a se- cond term. His reappointment is doubly gratifying because the uni- versity needs stability at this time as it moves into a major fund-rais- ing campaign and builds for the future.”’ ASSESSMENT Moonen says it is customary for a university board to assess a presicent in the fourth year of his or her five-year term so that suffi- cient time is available to search for a successor, should the incumbent move on. ‘In this case, the board felt that it made sense to take the fifth year of President Saywell’s current term and fold it into a new. ~ contract for six years,’’ explains Moonen. Commenting on his reappoint- ment, Saywell says: *‘I have been tremendously heartened by the way the campus has come together as a team to get through a very difficult period. SFU is a fine institution of the right size, age and quality to _allow new initiatives to occur and to provide one with the satisfaction of seeing how individual contribu- tions at all levels and from all con- — stituencies can make a difference. ““My wife Jane and I have come to love the university and the West Coast where our earlier roots have now been deepened.” SINOLOGIST “One of Canada’s leading sinologists, Saywell came to Simon Fraser University from the Univer- sity- of Toronto where he was a vice-provost responsible for the faculty of arts and science, the schools of graduate studies and contributing ‘studies, six colleges and the University Library. : : Saywell,.50, was born in Regiria and raised in British Columbia. He attended elementary and secondary | schools in Lake. Cowichan on Vancouver Island. His wife is also from the Lake Cowichan area. In 1963 he began teaching at the instructor rank with the department of East Asian studies at the University of Toron- to and by 1982 he was a full pro- fessor. Known internationally as an ex- pert on China, Saywell has written and lectured extensively on such topics as China’s foreign policy and educational system, its armed forces and Chinese-Canadian rela- tions. In 1972-73, he served as sinologist and first secretary at the Canadian Embassy in Peking. He speaks Mandarin. Saywell is also active in many off-campus organizations. His current responsibilities include ser- ving on the boards of the Discovery . Foundation of Van- couver. and the Association of Universities and Colleges of Canada.
