AT - Wednesday, February 15, 1984 - North Shore News Dear Editor: Let us hail the emergence of yet another well-chosen Minister of the Environment, Mr. Tony Brummet. How enlightening to read his fascinating thesis on the wolf. As he so refreshingly put it ‘‘one of the msot dangerous, vicious, wasteful and unrelenting killers in ex- istence.”’ His statements will not fail to attract the closest attention of all professional environmentalists, conserva- tionists and those of us who respect the lives of others who share this planet with us.We can certainly assured, Mr. Brummet, with his expressed contempt for wolves, will be valued by his peers at the Fish and Wildlife Branch, British Columbia’s wildlife extermination squad. Already there is evidence that he will continue to pursue that branch’s policy to preserve B.C.’s_ wilderness areas by declaring witch- hunts on the inhabitants. In Non-smokers Dear Editor: l am writing to express my support to the West Van- couver municipal govern- ment for its initiative to in- stall compulsory non- smoking areas in restaurants etc. With the vocal opposi- tion from restaurateurs, | feel compelled to invite the silent majority to speak up and support this government. Failure to do so may lead to the vocal minority winning their case. 1 believe that initiatives such as this are required because ‘there have been no moves by the restaurants rest © pursuit of such aim, this new Minister of the Environm- nent and his boys, have just proposed to eradicate 80 per cent of the wolves of the Peace River area. Of course,. it goes without saying that, as usual, highly detailed research was under- taken before proceeding on such an environmental ram- page. wolves, this can clearly be seen by statements made by one of the Department’s pro- fessionals; Mr. John Elliott, a biologist. He very proudly asserts that there is a *‘substantial decline in game’’ caused by ‘‘a problem of abnormally high wolf population on game ranges. However, we don’t know for sure how many wolves are in the area.”’ Naturally, men with such rational and complex thought processes have no need before making decisions to even consider other earlier Environment Ministry grateful themselves to implement such a situation even though I know that consumer groups and individuals continually lobby for this. [ hope other areas here on the North Shore take up the challenge. Maybe we can extend this to. food stores, Line ups at checkouts, etc, as other pro- vinces have done. As non- smokers, we are not asking that smoking be banned from . these places, just that it be segrated so that it doesn’t in- terfere with us. Michael T. Nor would it be befitting for anyone to even suggest that the loose. provin- cial hunting laws or the im- pact of the vast amount of imported European and American trophy hunters | should be evaluated. Last, but not least, let us not overlook the ingenuity of Mr. Brummet’s Department by so appropriately engaging hunters and big game guides to pay the bill for this carnage. 1 certainly look forward to the day when Mr. Brummet will exercise his talents.on our environment again.
