' ' A7-Sunday News, June 15, 1980 mailbox [eee Dear Editor: As a former Chairman of the Board of Lions Gate Hospital, I venture to make a few observations on the distressing situation which has developed in our hospital. I read with interest the comments of Dr. G. Barrie Purves and Dr. D.L. Warner as reported in your June 8 issue. I entire agree with their comments and urge the residents of North and West Vancouver to consider them carefully. ] served as a member of the Board and our hospital for over 17 years including acting as Chairman of the Board. When the hospital was officially opened in June, 1961, everyone was extremely proud of it. Politics stopped at the Board--Room door. Many prominent members of the community served on the board. We were not con- cerned with their politics or their religion but were in- terested only in doing what was best for the entire community. We enjoyed a close relationship between medical and narsing staff, allied health ( Professionals and administration. Two years ago.—we sud- denly became the focus of interest in B.C. Abortion had become a big issue. Instead of 5O members at the annual meetng, we suddenly had 600. In 1979 the process was nhiversary a very special “community” day! The anti- abortionists have in effect caused the majority of the Board to be branded as pro- abortionists, which is at the same time unfair and inaccurate. The recognized militancy and fervour of the anti- abortionist group has made its mark on the entire hospital. While I do not question the sincerity of their motives, I do question, and challenge, their right to introduce a partisan ap- proach to the solution of hospital problems. Lions Gate Hospital has always sought to provide a high level of patient care to all citizens regardless of politcal faiths, religious persuasion, race or economic circumstance. believe this is the way ost people want it to continue. If the anti-abortionist forces want to change the law, let them do it at the federal level. Unfortunately that does not suit their tactics. Their immediate goal is to obtain a majority of members on the Board and thus control hospital policy. The manner in which they are going about it however, will accomplish nothing more than _ the complete demoralization of the entire hospital. Is this really the price they are prepared to pay to un- plement their own views? I entreat every citizen in North and West Vancouver to consider this matter carefully between now and the annual meeting in Group ‘could destroy’ our hospital September. If you are not now a member of the society, sign up at once. It only costs a couple of dollars. Let us keep our hospital for all the people of our community and refuse to surrender it to a group whose scemingly unlimited fervour could destroy what we have struggled so long to achieve and maintain.
