Bank heist man
dies in Pen fight

A man serving five years
for taking off with $100,000
headed for the Bank of
Montreal at Westlynn Mall
while working as a Loomis
security guard in August
1977 was killed in a fight at
B.C. Penitentiary Friday.

David Sydney McDonald,
aged 41, of Delta, began his

sentence after the term was
handed down in Vancouver
County Court in March. He
had been ordered to make
restitution of the $100,000
which was never i:ecovered.

McDonald died of head
injuries after being involved
in what prison authorities
describe as an “altercation”

Perry Millar Thursday jailed
a youth for five days for
*jgnoring a driving suspen-
sion. And he commented
that the youth’s behaviour
“exhibits disregard for
authority which goes well
beyond the normal range.”

_Judge Millar said not only
did MacLean ignore the
suspension order, but he
argued with the officer
giving the suspension and as
a@ minor was illegally in
‘possession of alcohol.

Colin MacLean, aged 18,
of 1540 Taylor Way, pleaded
guilty in West Vancouver
Provincial Court Thursday
to driving after his license
had been suspended for 24
hours. —

The placing of com-
bustible materials near a
water tank is being blamed
as the reason for a fire which
caused an estimated $10,000
damage to a Lynn Valley
home Monday morning.

The fire broke out at 7:40
a.m. at the home of Mr. and
Mrs. Graham Tawse, at 1554
Burril Avenue and two fire
engines from the Lynn
Valley hall responded to
Mrs. Tawse’s call.

The court was told that on
March 28,° MacLean who
was driving ‘a Datsun pick-up
truck, was stopped by: police
who found a 12-pack of beer
in the truck.

e report said MacLean
he probably had
more. than the legal level of
alcohol in his blood, but said
__ his drivirigwwas not affected.

A short while later, the
report said, police noticed
the truck was not where it
had been parked, and they

. found it at MacLean’s home,
where MacLean admitted he
had drivenit..

MacLean. admitted having
drank three of the beer the

Earlier in the evening, the
report said three youths,
including MacLean, were
warned not to loiter around
the liquor store on Sixteenth
Street.

_ -In court MacLean said he.
had no good reason. for
ignoring the suspension. —

According to the report
the police officer who
stopped MacLeans felt that
he was not in a position to
drive home and gave him a
24-hour suspension.

After sentencing MacLean
to five days detention, Judge
Millar said if MacLean had
been older he would have
been imprisoned for two.
