orth Sh Distrust GVRD motives in clear-cutting decision Dear Editor: iam a teacher at Capilano Col- lege and a longtime resident of West Vancouver. 1am writing in response to the decision to endorse the clear-cut- ting of a 36-hectare are in the Capilano watershed. My information comes from the article on the front page of the North Shore News, Sunday, June 20, Tam saddened and disgusted by this decision and | believe that it is brought about by greed for the short-term profit gained by sale of the lumber. 1 also believe that the dollar profit is being downplayed and deceptively denied by the GVRD and i am left more distrustful than ever of the motives of the GYRD. it is obvious that, as en. vironmental groups SPEC and WCWC point out, soil will be Jost and damaged, a replanted forest is wterly different from the wild original, and siash in clear-cuts is a fire-hazard, ; If there are “reasons for in- lervention’’ sueh as the infected hemlock trees and the tall cedar snags and if “the object of the exercise is to do some watershed management and not same logging management’! and ‘“eost or net} profit is not the issue,’ then why: is a clear-cut planned rather chan selective thinning and removal of snags and debris, as suggested by SPEC's Pau! Hundal? When will Gur forests finally be perceived its soniething more than ; standing logs? They clean the air and clean and collect water. What, greater service is there? Not only.is the GVRD being short-sighted in this matter, they are being dishonest as well, Anthea Mallinson West Vancouver Wilson: life on a long string Dear Editor: Poor Gordon Wilson, former leader of the B.C, Liberal Party, firmly. believes in the saying ‘that a kite rises against the wind" (North Shore News, June 20). | have always admired Wilson for his ‘spunkiness: and his off- beat philosophical ramblings. 1 feel sorry that he has fallen on bad times, but let's examine his comparison to a kite, (1) To kite means to pass bad cheques (nat Wilson). (2) A kite isa bird of prey with a forked tail (not forked tongue — probably not Wilson). Perhans there is some validity {o his comparison, because like a kite, he appeared to be on a tong string, hovering above his caucus and somewhat isolated, ‘ But what caused his rapid de- scent wis probably the thunder and lightning «storms he en- countered, when his tail beenme too heavy, G.B. Miller North Vancouver . f ; on,Proposed | Secondary _ " homophabia Disturbi Dear Editor: We would like to respond to the Doug Collins article regarding ‘‘sodomites and homesexuals’’ (March 24), As an education and ad- vocacy organization in Van- couver, the Simon Fraser Public Interest Research Group (SFPIRG) is deeply disturbed by Collins’ obvious hatred and prejudice against gays and lesbians, That your newspaper would choose to publish such hate- ful “information” is equally disturbing. The media have an obliga- tion not only to “unbiased'' reporting, but also as a filter for hate-mongers. That such an individual would be given that kind of space in your paper is very disturbing, You have obviously achiev. ed your goal of sensationaliz- ing this issue and garnering publicity for your paper, but at the expense of continued and hatred towards a large portion of ‘our society. : SFPIRG intends to lobby many businesses in North Vancouver. The GVRD is considering two secondary disinfection methods - rechlorination and chloramination. An indepen- dent report which evaluates the two options and their impact on the environment and public health has been produced for the GVRD and is available for public review and comment. Copies of the report;“Environmental Impact Assessment of - Proposed Secondary Disinfection of Drinking Water Stage II,” are available for public viewing at municipal libraries and at the GVRD.
