With an average of 60,000 vehi- cles a day crossing over the Lions Gate, residents and commuters regularly grumble about the need for improved capacity. A one-time private toll bridge opened in 1938, the Lions Gate Bridge was built by the Guinness beer-brewing family for the then- princely sum of $6 million. With a 1,550-foot clear span, the builders had compromised with the local shipping community, which wanted it to have an 1,800-foot clear span. A small cross bridge at mid-span was for years a temporary home to various workers who had the Ione- ly job of overseeing harbor-going traffic. Until 1975, the Vancouver Har- bor signal station made its home there. Originally built with two lanes, the bridge was revamped shortly after opening by creating three narrower lanes, the centre reserved for overtaking. Bought by the provincial gov- ernment in 1963, the bridge underwent further changes: toll booths were removed and the cen- tre lane alternated directions. Cables supporting the deck are 134%2-inches in diameter and 3,400 feet long; each of the cables is made up of 61 separate prefabricated strands.
