Tapas and pasta bistro fitls gap From page 16 main entrees that are simple but adven- turous enough to steer clear of pedes- trian chop house fare (Roman Chicken, Chicken Limone, Grilled Lamb Sausages, Osso Bucco, Chicken Cacciatore, Grilled Pork Chops). The new Trattoria’s wine list is now dead simple: six whites and cight reds (Si9 to $28, primarily Italian selec- tions with a few Californian bottles thrown in for support). All are avail- able by the glass. Corsi faithful might initially have a hard time swallowing this new incarna- tion at No. 1 Lonsdale. The Trattoria was, after all, one of the North Shore’s first real high quali- ty Italian restaurants. Boasting such talent as Antonio and Mario Corsi and Gamal Hanna, it led the way out of the Canadianized lasagna and ribs wilder- ness and introduced the North Shore to the real passionate brilliance of Italian cookery. So what is with this tapas and pasta bistro? Whaddya mean no reservations? This is No. 1 Lonsdale, for God’s sakes. Hallowed ground. The site of Good points all. But the new Trattoria is aa astute shift of Corsi cars. The launch fast year of Vivace! in the old Cafe Roma room a block north and two blocks west signalled a shift in focus for the white-shirt-and-black-tie end of the Corsi dining spectrum. The grand Roman dining rooin left the Trattoria as a smaller variation on the same theme. There was little need to heave two restaurants in the same area serving the same market. And, too, the Trattoria was in need of a change. The restaurant at the foot of Lonsdale had been delivering the same dining experience to North Vancouver diners for the past 15 years. A good experience, it was, but inspiration was beginning to wanc. The location demands innovation. No. | greets seaside visitors to North Vancouver. It’s their first stop on the Lonsdale strip. The Corsi braintrust determined that the greeting should have a touch more pizzazz. A vigorous informal how do you do rather than a stiff bow and formal good evening. The menu overhaul is the first step in that shuft in Trattoria persona. A place where diners can drop by and grab a few piates of Grilled Lamb Sausage, Artichoke Hearts, perhaps an order of Sausage Crostini with a side of Baked Focaccia and a chilled glass of Libaio Chardonnay on their way north to the Esplanade strip or south to a SeaBus connection. A place to sample some Italian fast food on a hot summer afternoon. Physical changes to the restaurant heve thus far been confined to the Trattoria’s kitchen. A dining room overhaul remains on the drawing board. With the fate of the No. 1 Lonsdale location up in the air, there would be little point in investing too much in changing interi- or design. For now diners can sample the digestible end of the new Trattoria. Though service was uneven during its first week, an initial sampling found the new incarnation to be a welcome addition to Lower Lonsdale’s dining repertoire.
