& - Friday, November 8, 1996 ~ North Shore News Dear Editor: It’s time the truth was told. The fatess UN conference in June in Istanbul proved yer again to be an embarrassment for our nation. The conference was supposed to be about housing but of course Canada, along with the U.S. and the European Union, made sure that it was largely about abortion, giving rights to chil- dren over their parents and sexual ori- entation. Can we hope for anything better when the delegates who represent us and who take large sums of taxpayers dollars are the usual anti-family, anti- life, feminist crowd who dominate Ottawa? Thank God a group of pro- family lobbyists attended this confer- ence largely at their own expense. They were able to take on ourspo- ken people ike Bella Abzug, given $40,000 from CIDA (Canadian International Development Agency) to promote her feminist agenda on our behalf, and Stephen Lewis, promi- nent NDPer and used to having his awn way at UN agency press briefings. He evidently became enraged when asked some penetrating ques- tions by the pro-family participants. PUPA DENIER OAS OAS PS Our embarrassing Ul Good. Just for the record, and so our readers know what Canada’s role is at UN conferences — here are some pro- posals put forth by Canada, supposed- ly representing you and me: 1, Removal of all references to parental rights. 2. Supporting reproductive and sexual health care services (code words for abortion, sterilization and contra- ception) to apply to “people of all ages.” 3. Defining family so as to include homosexual /lesbian relationships. 4. l'romoting “gender equality and analysis” in every possible paragraph of the conference document. These proposals were initially sup- ported by the U.S. and Australia. But when a pro-family prime min- ister was clected in Australia just recently, Australia completely reversed itself. Likewise, when Senator Jesse Helms was notified of his country’s stand oa reproductive and sexual health care services for all ages, i.e. abortion, he swiftly sent a letter to each member of the U.S. delegation warning them. It worked wonders. Mailbox policy LETTERS to the editor must be legible (preferably typewritcen) and include name, full address and telephone number. What did we do? We made an ass of ourselves. We remained silent. When questioned about our controversial position, the answer given smugly was: “Our position is the official Liberal policy.” This policy (see proposals above) is our “official Liberal policy.” Is it yours? Were you ever consulted by your MP? It is a policy, indeed, about which Canadians are kept in the dark because Canada’s position at these UN confer- ences is never subject to debate or approval in the House of Commons, The ratification of any UN docu- ment amounts to simply an executive decision of the prime minister and it swiftly becomes government policy without so much as a nod of approval from Parliament. In sharp contrast, the U.S. system requires Senate approval for any ratiti- cation process. Filling the ranks of the Foreign Affairs Department and the Status of Women are radical feminists. Does this make you angry? Are we being, bambouzled by a Liberal gov- ernment who calls the shots without any input from our elected representa- tives? You bet we are. As Noel Wright so correctly stated in his brilliant article “Searching for politicians to speak for US" he said, “Under the present system they have forfeited the latter (confidence) by ceasing, to represent us. Once elected, they represent only their party and its boss.” It is high time Canadians stood up and demanded some accountability from their prime minister. In the meantime, watch for the next UN conference. It will be more of a battle against the anti-life, anti- family forces; more of a struggle to hold back the barbarians who are already inside the gates of the UN conferences. And Canada?
