North Shore Studios general
manager Ralph Alderman is quick to
add to his statement that the standing
of the Canadian dotlar is not the only
question an American producer will
ask before considering Canada as d
location.

In the case of North Shore
Studios the answer to both questions
is resoundingly positive and also

_ contributed to making 1994 a
“tremendous year”.

It is that success which prompted
Alderman (o search for additional
space to expand the studios and bet-
ter serve its customers — the often
finicky and mostly American pro-
ducers.

After several dead ends the
search culminated with the tempo-
rary Sunrise Park site for which
Alderman recently received prelimi-
nary approval from North Vancouver
City Council.

Although the Sunrise Park expan-
sion deal he is seeking is temporary

— the city does not
have the authority to
alter park designation
without a city-wide ref-
crendum — Alderman
points out that itis fir

Alderman. “We still

rary-use permit, we still
have to agree with the
city on the amounts of
money ... all the dili-

The planned tempo-
tary expansion is not
without its detractors.
One of them, the Narth Vancouver
Community Sport and Recreation
Advisory Council, had proposed an
indoor tennis facility for the same
Sunrise Park site.

cillors in which she stated that coun-
cillors should “be aware that siting
of a public recreation facility in a
park is a legitimate use of park land™
and added that as it stands Sunrise
park “is completely undeveloped.”

After council’s decision to
endorse the North Shore Studios
proposal in principie, Cousins told
the News that while the decision was
disappointing, it was not devastating.

Alderman says that while it is
good to have the public aware of the
industry in general terms, he avoids
publicity for security reasons.

These include providing a good
environment —— one that is con-
ducive to letting producers do their
work in peace and making the actors
fect safe. The security issue is
responsible for the absence of any
public tours of the facility.

“We're kind of our own worst
enemy.” says Alderman. “We go out
and create all this mystique about
ourselves and then we shelter the
mystique.”
