A vegetarian beef about meat-eaters Dear Editor: Are you a. vegetarian? No? Well you should be. Let's put aside the fact that it has been proven that eating less meat and ‘more vegetables is much more beneficial to your health. (We all know this by now, except those who. still think smoking is A OK.) . Let's not.mention the fact that | raising livestock is a very ineffi- « cient use of land — it takes a lot :: of grass to make a pound of beef, not to mention the methane pro- duced. Let's not talk about injecting cows with steroids and antibiotics or the fact that it’s better to cook . your meat really well (you never know where the meat inspector is getting his paycheque). Now that we have put aside, hot mentioned or talked about ‘some of the bad things about ~meat-eating, let’s actually say something. “Would you kill your cat for : Dear Editor: | Why, do | municipat leaders approve land development prior to » the, installation of supportive infra- ., Structure and funding? Most of us would say with great — assurance absolutely not. Why? Because we have feelings. We know that our pets have feelings. We love our pets and they us. In fact some- times we treat them like humans. Do we honestly think that just because cows don’t have a human family or that chickens don’t purr that they don’t have feelings? Do you think a chicken likes ils head cut off? . ‘The point is that we distance ourselves from the violence that is committed in our name. We let ourselves become hardened. The more we kill other forms of life the more hardened. we become. Until the day comes that we don’t even think twice about lobbing a bomb in some remote country. Why should we? Rather than provide capital for budget needs these large developments _ re-absorb. revenue .just by virtue of their creation. This has been demonstrated by Northlands disastrous budget over- run. Additionally there is the costh ly recommendation by N.D. One can observe these stupid beings on our strects in abundance. When [ attended school many years ago (in U.K.) smoking was merely a “dirty habit.” And virtually no school kids bothered with the weed, I never did. No one ever tempt- ed me. And I've never smoked. Yet reasons to fear smoking did not then exist. Today another story. Well known it is that “fags” at best dinvinish res- piratory health. At worst, and all too often, virtually guarantee chronic i}l- ness, and for many, an earlier than necessary permanent: visit to the graveyard.
