EVEN THE most seasoned actors may not know what they'll be do- ing six months down the road. An audition here, a last-minute phone call there, the working scheduie of most performers is anything but routine. Rosanne Hopkins and Christi Lowis have acted for a combined total of 50 years, and like many others in the trade, they were tired of the uncertainty. So the North Vancouver women are doing what an_ increasing number of artists find themseives doing: making work for themselves. Last year they opened the Hopkins-Lowis Music Theatre Studio’ for young people, a fall- summer program that covers everything- from jazz baliet to vocal performance. The forest can also be used for hiking, cycling and fishing. mt 1 NSS ae SEASONED ACTOR Rosanne Hopkins who has garnered roles in film, TV and musical theatre. The 50-year-old North Van- couver native says she was motivated to start her own business because it was becoming harder and harder to find roles in her age category. Then she approached Lowis, a 21-year-old graduate of Hands- worth Secondary who she had known for years, and the two began discussing the idea of open- ing a school, “We like io share our know- ledge,”’ says Hopkins. ‘‘We’ve both worked with great teachers and mentors — Dolores Kirkwood, Grace MacDonald. It seems that the best way to use your skills is to pass them on.”’ The duo are hoping more boys will attend this season; last year only cone boy for every 10 girls signed up. “All kids can sing and dance. Alpine environment studied THE NORTH Shore Neighbour- hood House (NSNH) is presenting a walk through the Yew Lake Old-Growth Forest on Sept. 30. The Yew Lake interpretive trail “walk will provide participants with views of Vancouver and Howe Sound while teaching about the alpine environment. The one-and-a-half-hour walk will be highlighted by the rare round-leaved sundew, an_ insect- eating plant,- the world’s oldest Yellow Cedar, and visits to the Lynn Valley.
