Kariya thinks his size actually works in his favor. He uses: it as a motivator, to ‘prove to his critics that there’s room in this game for the little guy. “Ym no Theoron Fleury in a sense (that) I’m not minute out there, but being small, ’ve had to prove myself at every level. 1 have to play myself onto a_ team, whereas a big guy has to play himself off a team.” The Panthers have so far lost only eight times in 33 games. The ever-humble centre at- tributes his team’s success to a balanced scoring attack. “We've got three limes that can score this year, and since all our lines have the potential to score every game, it takes the pressure off me. It makes us a better hockey club.’* At this level, Kariya is fun to watch. He squirts around the rink like a waterbug, and is one of those rare players who wheel around like they have invisible rocket-boosters attached to the back of their skates. Three steps and he’s gone, From there, he doesn't have to move his legs. Momentum carries him at @ high vate of speed. He can move the puck anytime, anywhere he wants, and he is never predictable with his up-ice rushes. His hands keep up with his feet, which is quite a task. Like any young kid growing up in Canada, Kariya has his hockey idols. “Gretzky is definitely my idol and | like Hull too. I idolize any- one in the NHL, anyone who is .above the level I'm playing at, because you always want to strive to be the best you can be.” SPORTSLINE play at the PNE Agrodome. Nosth Vancouver’s Grant Connett is a likely player for singles and doubles. eee FEB. 2: RecCentre Ron Andrews is holding an indoor triathlon.
