It’s the world’s largest Unit- ed Way logo, which will be built in under one hour as part of the kickoff to the United Way’s annual fundraising campaign in the Lower Mainiand. The event, hosted by Kevin Evans of CBC’; Evening News, will take piace on Tuesday, Sept. 24 at the Robson Square ice rink from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The balloon structure, which will use 291 cubic feet of helium, will be constructed by 13. teams representing local municipalities, and will include local mayors and celebrities. North Shore residents benefit from several regional United Way agencies that have offices here, such as the YMCA and Canadian Mertal Health Association, but also have ac- cess to several United Way agencies that deal specifically with North and West Van- couver concerns. These include the. North Shore Association for the Physically Handicapped, which promotes the treatment, educa- tion and welfare of people with physical disabilities. It operates eight adult group homes, a dependent adult day program, a residence for five physically disabled children, a one-to-one support program for disabled children ‘living with their families, refer- ’ rals, and more. The United Way North Shore committee is composed of 13 volunteers who have been focusing on youth = services, housing, a seniors’ task force and a transportation advisory commnittee. United Way volunteers will be raising awareness of the fundraising campaign at the Sept. 8 Coho Festival in West Vancouver, and on the after- noon of Sept. 15 at the Family Day at Waterfront Park. The campaign will officially end on Wednesday, Nov. 27, with the announcement of the 1991 fundraising total. Of every dollar donated, 98 cents goes directly to agencies and services. Fundraising costs are 10 cents on the collar, eight of which are paid for out of the United Way’s Endowment Fund. .
