6 - Sunday, March 5, 1989 - North Shore News INSIGHTS Expo’s exciting legacy seeks your and my THAT HUMAN DYNAMO from West Van, Barbara Brink, is now coming after thee and me for a little last- minute assistance in delivering her spectacular new baby. The president of Science World B.C., is appealing to individuals and smaller businesses throughout the province to donate the remain- ing $2 million needed for the ex- citing world-class science centre which opens permanently May 6 in the geodesic dome of Expo °86 — with 100,000 sq.ft. of space for exhibits, theatre, art, live perfor- mances and other uses. Barbara of the most dangerous highways in B.C. with an slarmingly high number of accidents and fatalities, but the Highways Ministry and local police detachments seem to have turned a blind eye to such statistics. Heavy weekend traffic between Horseshoe Bay and Road priority Te SQUAMISH Highway continues to be one has been front and centre of the two-year fundraising campaign which to date has provided some $15 million of the total capital cost of around $17.3 million —- con- tributed by four levels of govern- ment and major corporations such as Fletcher Challenge, B.C. Tel, 3.C. Hydro and Placer Dome, among other donors. The outstanding $2 million will enable Science World to open two months from now mortgage-free. Its extensive Outreach Program will also take its presentations to every corner of B.C. Hence the logic of seeking the final gifts from the ‘‘little people’’ of the province, hundreds of thousands of whom will benefit from this legacy of Expo. Okay, but how much does Bar- bara want from little ME? Well, she'll send you a tax receipt for $10 upward. Of course, if you can spring $100, $500, $1,000 or more, you'll get an even nicer iax receipt. And if you splurge five grand or better, your name (or your com- pany's) will be permanently engraved on an honor roll at the centre, You can also make a pledge and pay in instalments. The address is: Capital Cam- paign, Science World B.C., 1455 Quebec Strect, Vancouver V6B 5E7. So all you need now is your cheque book and a pen! ene “MINISTRY OF CULTURE" for the Norih Shore could be one way of describing the new North Shore Arts Commission which recently held its inaugural mecting. Created to support and develop the arts in North and West Van, it differs from the two sponsoring Com- help SebsR. ete JUDY DENNIS realities. ae ae .culture and munity Arts Councils by being a **political’’ body, meaning that half of the 13 new culture czars are from local government — members of municipal councils, school boards, parks and recre- ation departments. The idea being that the arts people will define needs, while the municipal people define the realities of budgets and structures. Chairman is Judy Dennis of the North Van Arts Council, with Lorne Topham speaking for West Van Arts Council and Alen Smith for Cap College. Jim Felter, Ann Booth and Gene Ramsbottom rep- resent respectively the visual arts, theatre and music. The ‘‘practical’” types are Mayor Jack Loucks, Ald. Murray Dykeman and Ald. Pat Boname; school trustees Anre MacDonald and Jeen Ferguson; and Rec Department spokesper- sons Kieran MacLeod and Ann Titcomb. An interesting mix and a challenging job: sorting out cul- tural goals and the limits of the possible for a community of culture-conscious taxpayers. Lots of luck, Judy and fellow commis- Whistler combined with hazardous winter road condi- tions on a narrow and winding highway add up to a high risk of death and destruction. And yet, rosd improvements and traffic control measures have, at best, been slack; at worst, non-exis- tent. The provincial government can no longer neglect the obvious need to upgrade the highway through widen- ing the road, straightening dangerous curves, ac:ling more passing lanes, filling in potholes, repaving older road sections, and adding more ‘‘cat’s eyes"’ or fluores- cent centre lines. Police detachments in West Vancouver, Squamish and Whistler need te beef up traffic enforcement and erack down on speeding and reckless drivers. Road blocks should be set up to turn back cars not equipped with winter tires. Police should also launch an information campaign on winter driving: from the pros and cons of back- wheel, front-wheel and four-wheel drive vehicles; to the importance of snow tires, studs, chains, sandbags and shovels; to the various driving techniques neces- sary in rain, slush, snow and on ice. Such measures may cost more money, but they wil! certainly save lives. sioners!
