Health volunteers sought DOREEN COOKE and Jenny Sciuiiz may be decades apart in . age but they share a common in- terest as volunteers for the North Shore Health Department’s conti- nuing care program. Cooke, 83, has worked with the program for the past six years, Her - week is divided between visits to mentally ill patients at a local resi- dential facility; a lady-her own age suffering from emphysema who is also losing her sight and hearing but wishes to remain in her. own home; and a crippled neighbor. For each one she provides a special type of, support: perhaps it is _ one-on-one attention, a gentle touch, some home baking or fresh ’ flowers. “One of life’s satisfactions is to give,”’ says Cooke. ‘‘And I feel I’m a-more outgoing, loving per- * son because of it.”” ‘When asked why she became a volunteer, Jenny Schultz, 14, answers: “‘It was something I had. been working up to since moving here a couple of years ago.’’ She learned of the program at Sentinel Secondary School in West Van- couver where she entered Grade 9 this September. Prior to that Schultz’s father had owned a nurs- ing home. “I just assumed everyone would do it,’? she says in reference to her involvement.”’ ‘It’? for Schultz means three hours one evening a week, serving dinner to seniors at the West Vancouver congregate meal program, operated by the North Shore Home Support Ser- vices Society. Under this program residents in designated seniors’ housing gather twice a week for a + social as well as nutritious dinner in the communal dining room. “] like to see them (the seniors) smile. I like it a lot. They have liv- ed a whole life and could tell you a lot,’? Schultz remarks. . According to Fabbro, the main purpose of the existing program is one of support to elderly and chronically ill persons, thus enabl- ing people to remain in their own homes as long as possible. By tak- ing the time to add a personal touch to caregiving, the volunteers enrich and enhance the quality of life for these people. Volunteers are important members of a team of health care providers and have ready access to the expertise and support of pro- fessionals should concerns arise‘in their work. The program offers anyone who wishes to help a great deal in the way of flexibility and variety. Vol- unteers can choose the day, the time, and the degree of involve- ment, as well as what they might like to do. Aside from visiting as Doreen Cooke does, or‘aiding with meals as Jenny Schultz does, peo- ple are needed in a myriad of areas _ such as general office work, mann- ing displays with staff, organizing bulletin boards, grocery shopping _ and outings. “I'd like to see entire families get involved with the health department’s community services and programs,’’ says Fabbro.
