Sere Spey v7 Scandal in baseball flick Eight Men Out ** 2 (Orion) Rated M (at the Granville Cinema) IF YOU'RE a baseball fan, you can probably add one star to the rating. If not, John Sayles’ latest film offers some fine acting, a nice period atmosphere and the history behind the phrase, “Say it ain't so, Joe’’. The story centres on the scandal surrounding eight players on the White Sox team who conspired with some mobsters to throw the 1919 World Series. Cheated of a decent wage and fed up with flat promises from owner Charlie Comisky (Clifton James), team members are quick to accept a proposition to “ease-up’’ for a couple of games against the inferior Cincinnati Reds. However, it doesn’t take long for two journalists (played by Studs Terkel and director John Sayles) to clue in when the Sox start to play like the Hooterville Hawks. Before they know it, the eight conspirators find the Big Boys play hardball and that they are ex- pected to lose the series. As if that isn’t bad enough, they find the promised 10 grand a head is ‘out on bets’. Trapped, the team tosses the eighth game to lose the show. The articles appear, the eight are tried and, in a fix worthy of the 1919 Series, they are acquitted. But a commission, set up by the teamowners frantically trying to clean baseball’s blackened image, bans the eight accused from play- ing major league again. The best team ever was busted. Since this is history, suspense has widely been ignored in favor of the conflicts between honest and crooked team members and how they wrestled with their con- sciences. In a cast with so many prin- cipals, all well-acted, it’s hard to pick out any single individual. D.B. Sweeney as ‘‘Shoeless’’ Joe Jackson, John Cusack as Buck Weaver and David Strathairn as pitcher Eddie Cicotte, give heart- felt performances that breathe sife into countless baseball scenes. But, when all’s said and done, if you're not a baseball fan, you may find the two hours could use a 7th inning stretch. TIM BELL film reviewer Shadow of a Doubt *** % (MCA Home Video) Unrated In this Hitchcock classic, Joseph Cotten plays Teresa Wright’ s beloved Uncle Charlie who drops in on her Norman Rockwell-type town for a visit. Little Charlie (Wright) gradually uncovers her uncle’s nasty secret behind his fi- nancial security and his connec- tion with the ‘‘“Merry Widow” murders. Hitchcock amuses himself by us- ing “two” as his motif (duo Charlie’s, two scenes in a diner, characters pairing off, etc.) but the casual viewer will still find an engrossing thriller that paints a dark picture of the evil that can lurk in a seemingly sunny little town. Cotten has an especially gripping scene when, with a chill- ‘ing detachment, he describes the type of woman he victimizes. One of Sir Alfred’s rarely seen personal favorites finally gets the exposure it deserves.
