20 - Wednesday, April 1, 1987 - North Shore News Sports _ FOR THE second year in a row, Vancouver will host one of the most ambitious relay races ever undertaken as skiers, sailboarders, cyclists, kayakers, canoeists and marathoners combine talents on April 25 for the Schloss Laderheim Ski to Sea Race. Presented by Calona Wines, the race will include 40 nine-member teams who will race from the ‘heights of Grouse Mountain to a finish line on Jericho Beach. “The concept of this race is to include eight sports available to the public on a typical Vancouver spr- ing day,’’. race co-founder Malcolm Skinner said. The’ Schloss Laderheim Ski to Sea Race will open at Grouse Mountain peak when the first team members ski out of a Le Mans- style start and race as far as snow will permit. Discarding their skis, poles and boots, the competitors will quickly change into their favorite running gear, previously stashed at the snow line, and run the remainder of the hill to the base of the old Skyline chairlift. These runners will hand off to their teammates who will be waiting on mountain bikes. The cyclists will manoeuvre down an old gravel road to Nancy Green Way, having to negotiate an obstacle course along the way, and finally to the Capilano River. The race will then switch to the water as kayakers and white-water canoeists negotiate the Capilano rapids and race to the ocean and their next team member waiting at Ambieside. The fourth leg of this multi- disciplinary marathon is a 10 kilometre run from North Van- couver, over. the Lions Gate Bridge, around the Stanley Park seawall, past English Bay to Sunset Beach. Then it’s back into the ocean as one-man kayaks will navigate a buoyed course which will take them to Kitsilano Beach. Handing off from kayak to canoe, two-man canoes will go from Kits Beach to Jericho.
