Because of improvements in ma- terials and design, there’s more (to athletic footwear than meets the eye. Selecting the right kind of shoe is important for fully enjoying sports activity and helps avoid in- juries. “The two basic criteria for selecting athletic footwear are knowing what you'll use the shoes for and understanding the shoe's features and how they benefit you,"* says Bill Mintiens, Adidas sports shoes product manager. FEATURES VARY Comfort, shock absorption, stability, traction and durability are the key features to look for. These features vary among shoe types to accommodate the par- ticular movements required and forces exerted in different sports. While no single type of shoe is ideally suited for all sports, Adidas has developed a line of multipur- pose sports shoes, including the “Workout”? for men and the “Physical’? for women. These shoes are designed for dance, exer- cising, calisthenics, weight train- ing, walking and light jogging. Mintiens cautions against wear- ing running shoes for aerobics, tennis or basketball and vice versa. Running shoes are designed for forward motion while the foot movements in dance, exercising and court sports are somewhat similar and include rapid forward, backward and lateral movements with sudden stops and jumps. SAME PARTS AII sports shoes have the same basic parts which should be exam- ined before making a selection. The outsole comes in contact with the playing surface and must be durable as well as provide the right traction. New midsole materials have been developed and offer varying combinations of cushioning and support. The insole is closest to the foot and provides additional cush- ioning. Uppers come in different mate- tials and combinations. Perfor- mance running shoe uppers are often a combination of nylon and leather which allow feet to expand and breathe. Better quality court and exercise shoes have all-leather uppers which provide the support needed during sideways movement. Made of lightweight but rigid plastic compounds, the heel counter is important because it helps keep the foot from rotating inside the shoe.
