C6 - Sunday, October 16, 1983 - North Shore News The NicDonald Tutoring Service Volunteers are the life blood VOLUNTEERS are the life- blood of many of the North Shore’s private agencies. The range of programs offered here would be impossible without their involvement. At North Shore Family Services, volunteers receive excellent training and profes- sional support. They work directly with families, assist with clerical and library duties, befriend patients on the ward of the palliative care unit at Lions Gate and also work with parents and young children at the agency’s seven drop-in centres, spread across the North Shore from Gleneagles to Deep Cove. The Drop-in Centres rely heavily on volunteers who work closely with the Com- munity Family Workers. As part of a team, the volunteer this hostess co-ordinator oversees the parents program, helping to create a friendly informal atmosphere. Parents may just meet their neighbors over a cup of coffee or sometimes enjoy a guest speaker. Someone who has an outgoing personality and can appreciate the challenges of a young family is needed for volunteer assignment. The Drop-In Centres will not be able to continue unless new volunteers are found. The need is most urgent in the parent’s part of the pro- gram. Assistance in the playroom is another ongoing need, however. For more in- formation on volunteer train- ing and opportunities cal! Nelleme Fabbro. 988-5281.
