Teachers say board ruled out all their proposals FROM PAGE A1 minutes of a _ personnel committee meeting. However, the News learned that it was at that meeting where the teachers proposed a two-day holiday, Chairman Mark Sager told the public meeting he wanted the minutes “out on the table,” because “I would like this whole discussion to have been public.” However, the rest of the board members said they were not comfortable dealing with issues brought up in a confidential meeting. “Both sides go into those meetings thinking they are confidential, we should not change the ground rules now.” said trustee Norm Alban. Sager argued un- successfully that the board’s position was not clear in the public’s mind and that the discussion should be held in a public forum. The teachers claim their proposal would save the recently terminated teacher aide positions. ‘““We discussed co- operative measures which could alleviate the layoff situation,” said WVTA president Heather Walker. “We were told none of our solutions were acceptable to the board,” Walker said. “They would not negotiate and they made no counter proposals.” The teachers” recently ratified recommendations from their executive which stated there would be no contract concessions made this year. The teachers also stipulated they would not “tolerate terminations” and would stick to a policy of “no pay, no work.” _ Some hints during the discussion at the board meeting made it sound hke the trustees had no position on the teachers’ proposal “Pm sure that the other orgamzations have a clear positon, I'm not sure that the board's position is all that clear,” Alban said. Personnel committee chairman John Gregory said they had explored “every option and proposal to mitigate cutbacks and to date none have ensured that the schools will remain open and fully operative, a policy the board plans to stick to ” “Therefore we are adhernng to the plan ap proved at the board mecting September 13.7 9 Gregory said Another twist) to the confusion surrounding the confidential mecting was a complaint’ from) a parent. who asked why she was not allowed at the = mecting. when there were other partics not connected with the school board or em ployees there “There was one interloper there, but when we asked all non staff to leave. we just didn't want a scuffle " said Alban School Supennteadent Ed Carlin pointed out that he asked af there were any members of the press at the mecting BO? yz ib) box: Al3 - Wednesday, September 29, 1982 - North Shore News 25% Off Assorted Fashion Training Suits By ‘VIP’ A.
