A2- Sunday, June 20, 1982 - North Shore News known as faith. A word as loaded as “faith” has to be broached carefully. Its too easy to confuse with dogma = or doctrine. Most of what passes for faith is nothing much more than memorization, like learning your multiplicauon table so that it clicks to mind effortlessly for the rest of your life. I was raised as a Roman Catholic and so I tend, as a lapsed Catholic, to be rather paranoid about the idea of faith. strictly personal _by Bob Hunter Have faith -it works SOMETHING that doesn’t get discussed much anywhere except in church is the state of mind Being forced to recite the questions and answers in the Catechism unul they were thoroughly impmnted on my brain scarcely adds up to real faith, at least not in my estimation. With all due respect for Catholics, and a bow in the directon of their mght to beheve what they want, I think you do have to dif- ferentiate between faith and behef. Beliefs are passive. I can beheve the world is round, when it isn't (it's shghtly egg shaped), and it doesn’t change the shape of the world one iota. Faith is the opposite. Faith can move mountains. It’s an actual force of some kind. I was told several years ago by a Tibetan Buddhist monk that faith by ttself doesn't work unless you have confidence. That's a very big factor. But’ whatever the exact psychological mix, the fact of life that seems to me to be the most important to learn 1s that you do create the world around you. We are not, after all, “strangers and afraid, in a world we never made.” We re-make the world every day. Each of us. And we do it down to the most inumate details. A Nobel laureate, Eugene Wigner, put it as well as anybody when he said: "The movion of matter is thought to be not influenced by consciousness, even though consciousness is) obviously influenced by the motion of matter...... “It seems more hkely, however, that this view is incorrect and that living matter is actually influenced by what it influences: consciousness.” By the word “faith” I mean the vehicle through which this basic telepathic tinkering that we all con- stantly do with the environ- ment around us is_ con- sciously brought to bear. At a certain level, Norman Vincent Peale had it mght when he said that the answer is positive thinking. And Hayden Stewart understands it perfectly when he says: Be the change you want to see Last laugh is on W. Van grads IT MAY all just be done in moments of exuberance, but West Vancouver police have had about enough of the problems they are having to deal with arising from celebrations and pranks by Last week the police were again wondering what kind of weekend was in store for them and were threatening to clamp down on grads the same way as with other people who get out of hand. “Grad activities are keeping us very busy — minor vandalism, kids racing around in cars and that sort of thing,” a spokesman told the News. “When there is damage left behind we are obligated to follow it up so it’s pretty hard to look upon it as a prank. Tos ere, “Parties tend to get out of hand at this time of year because of uninvited guests. Neighbors can only tolerate so much noise and in- convenience and we have to take action.” The spokesman added: “It may be a great party and a festive occasion for the students but unfortunately, if they are irresponsible we have to treat it as we would any other type of crime, as other people are often af- fected — neighbors, property owners and traffic victims.” He summed up: “We appreciate it is grad time but we have a responsibility to ensure that peace is kept.” happen. Faith, in the sense that I mean it, is a psychic arm, if you hike, reaching out and tampering with events. Put it this way: I once remember telling a man that it was a good thing | hadn't showed up at a certain place at a certain ame because something awful had hap- pened there that day. His reply -- this guy was wise -- was that if I had been there, it might have been different. The “bad” thing might not have happened. If this sounds like oc- culnism, | guess in a diluted sort of way, it is, assuming that anything not = im- mediately verifiable through accepted empirical methods is “occult.” One statement that im- pressed me many years ago was to the effect that a little attention to the occult produced great karmic dividends. Since it is not scientific, the phenomenon of faith must surely fall under the heading of the weird or mystic -- especially if anyone makes the claim that it works. But to tell you the truth, I would make just that claim. Have faith. Be confident. There's a very good chance you'll win. And if you want to verify this, look at the people who are at the top of the ladder. They have faith in them- selves, if nothing else. What more do you need? And they are confident. It works.
