LOUIS (UPI) - Kids may come back from camp with sunburn, freckles, frogs — and cavities. Cavities multiply when youngsters are at camp, away from parental supervision, says Dr. ‘Thomas Schiff, assistant professor of oral diagnosis and radiology at Washington ” University School of Dental Medicine. Schiff says tooth decay problems after summer . camp are due to increased snacking and reduced care - away from home. Kid campers tend to eat more junk food, Schiff says, and their diets may differ markedly from what they're given at home. They also may have easy access to machines — with candies, cookies and sugared soft drinks. He says camp dictitians nearly always include sugar- rich desserts, sometimes at lunch and dinner, as well as offering doughnuts and sweet rolls at breakfast. Parents don’t help, cither, when they send candy-filled packages in response to that frequent complaint, “There's nothing good to cat at camp.” Many children whose diets are strictly supervised at home view camp and vacations as an opportunity to indulge in usually for- ideal will really come true and respected by her bidden pleasures, such as and she'll be allowed to grow’ children and great-grand- sugary foods. old gracefully and be loved = children. Clean, modern lincs com- three it to break the routine of brushing their teeth at least twice daily, which many parents enforce at home. Canip counsellors may "just not be able to keep track of each youngster’s oral hygiene habits, Schiff says, so it’s even more important that children have an ef- fective oral hygiene program at home the rest of the year. Try to limit their exposure to sugar and reduce the time sugar is in contact with their teeth, he says. Instead of cookies and candy, try to keep healthy snacks on hand such as celery and carrot sticks, fruits, nuts and cheese. Make sure your children brush their teeth at least every morning and night if you can't persuade them to brush after evey meal. If they can't or won't carry a toothbrush, then remind them to rinse their mouths with water every time they eat. An important aid in preventing cavities is an adequate amount of fluoride, especially when teeth are developing, the professor says. Fluoride supplements can be added to community drinking water, or used as dietary sup- plements in non-fluoridated water area, in toothpaste and in a fluoride anticavity rinse. A recent study has shown daily use of a fluoride dental rinse can reduce cavities by nearly 40 per cent over and above the effectiveness of fluoridated toothpaste, even in.a fluoridated water area. A gentle reminder to use dental floss on a daily basis at home is also worthwhile, Schiff says.: Dental floss helps remove food particles that lodge between teeth and along the gum line. It also helps discourage the build- up of plaque, the film for- med by bacteria acting on food debris. NORBURN LIGHTING CENTRE _.has-a reputation of experienced gervice and is the place to see .
